THERE will be everything to play for in the final round of B Division matches where Thorverton and Cullompton are among the four sides chasing one promotion spot.
Seaton are already up as champions and right behind them are Bovey Tracey 2ndXI, who are not allowed to go any higher than the B Division as league rules stand now.
That means whoever finishes third will be playing A Division cricket next season and the not-so-short list of candidates is: Kilmington (205pts), Cullompton (201), Thorverton (199) and Plymstock (198).
The stand-out game in the last round is Kilmington against Thorverton. Cullompton are at home to Bovey and Plymstock go to relegated Brixham.
Jason Parr, they Cullompton captain, said: “It is going to be an exciting day for a few sides.
“All we can do is try our best to get a good result against Bovey and that should take us past them and guarantee a third-place finish.
“We've been on a good run to finish and whatever happens it's been a successful season for us.
"Obviously we would love to grab the second promotion spot. If results don't fall in our favour then we'll look forward to another season playing enjoyable cricket in a very competitive B Division.”
Cullompton’s prospects improved last time out at the expense of Thorverton, whom they defeated by five wickets.
Skipper Andy Pitt said getting promoted from Thorverton’s position after they lost to Cullompton last time out will take some doing.
“We still have a slim chance but it's going to take quite a few results to go our way,” said Pitt.
“You could argue that we should have scored more runs, but we bowled 30-plus extras and didn't create enough pressure on their top order.
“Runs came freely for them and it made our decent score look way short, but I think it's over the last three weeks that we have really let ourselves down.”
Opener Paul Fielder stroked a top score of 93 in Thorverton’s total of 211 for five. He was fourth out with the score on 208.
Fielder and skipper Pitt opened up with 79. Fielder put on exactly 100 with Ben Sapiecha (49).
James Vincent (3-34) and Jacob Dienes (2-30) were the leading wicket takers. Todd Scrace (9-0-28-0) gave little away.
Pakistani pro Jamal Answar made 32 as Cully reached 69 for two in reply. Brendon Parr sorted out the rest of the chase, batting through for an unbeaten 73 as Cully won it with four overs to spare.
Winning captain Jason Parr said: “It was a great effort from all of the bowlers and in the field to restrict Thorverton to 211 and after they got off to a bit of a flyer.
“James Vincent bowled as well as I've seen him bowl this year and picked up some key wickets.
“The run chase was very well paced and we always stayed ahead of the rate.
“There were some useful contributions throughout and Brendon’s knock to see us home was exceptional.”
