Bond Timber League Nailed by Cornwood

And so another year of Plymouth & District cricket draws to a close……

2019 saw Cornwood CC dominate the Senior Division and take the title convincingly with Jelf Insurance securing their maiden title in the Division One with an equally impressive performance.

Despite the flaky summer weather interfering occasionally, the season has been a great success with games played in excellent spirit and some stand out performances from players across the age spectrum!!

A thrilling Cup Finals Day at Langton Park saw Buckland lifting the League Shield after a thrilling tied game and then successfully winning the bowl off. The cry of ‘One Short’ on the final ball of the game prompted the counting of wickets which were also tied. Despite the popular call for a super over, the rule book dictated a bowl off where a single Buckland ball of the collective twelve bowled decided the honours. I feel a rule change coming this AGM!!!

The League Cup Final was a less dramatic affair with Cornwood setting a challenging 171 to win. When the rain started to fall with 79 to win off 18 balls there was a reluctance to return to the field. With Buttler and Stokes on international duty, the required run rate was deemed a fruitless pursuit, the DLS prediction was in Cornwood’s favour, the bar was open and the fat lady was impatiently waiting to sing!!!

A very enjoyable day and thank you to all those who played or watched and to Gerry Keen of YBCC for providing a playable wicket despite the summer deluges.

The traditional season finale, saw Cornwood complete their domination of the season beating the Bond Timber League Representative side convincingly on a sunny evening at Dean Cross. Setting a target of 143 off 18 overs, the Rep side mustered 67 in reply as the sun set on the cricketing season. More importantly Eva May McDowell will be getting some more fundraising monies to help her with her CHARGE Syndrome challenges.

A huge thanks to Andy Waltz for his sterling efforts as League Secretary over recent years and particularly this season doubling up as Fixture Secretary. Andy is now stepping down due to more pressing matters and on that note congratulations to Andy & Kelly on the arrival of Macy Elizabeth last week.

I would also like to thank the rest of the committee for all their efforts in supplying umpires, managing accounts and successfully administering a league which provides a lot of pleasure to cricketers in and around the Plymouth area. In addition, I applaud all the clubs and their organisers for getting teams out each week and playing cricket in the correct spirit. Next year we have had more volunteers to assist with the managing of the league so the future is bright.

Umpires and groundsman also deserve a mention as we could not play without their efforts and of course, Bond Timber for their continued support for our League and the many other sporting causes in the region. Remember to buy your timber and garden furniture from Bond Timber, mentioning your association to P&D cricket to negotiate a discount!!!!

Enjoy the break and see you all again next season.
