ASHBURTON’S C Division West promotion prospects have been boosted by the arrival of two new players for the season ahead.

New Zealander Fergus Martin has been signed as the overseas player at Varwell Field for the season ahead.

Ian Messom - a useful addition to Ashburton's middle order for 2020Martin, 27, is a right-arm seamer who plays for Hutt District CC in Wellington. He has played Premier cricket in the Wellington region since 2011 and is a reliable opening bowler who can swing the ball.

Ashburton finished second behind runaway champions Dartington & Totnes last season, which has given the Kiwi newcomer something to aim for.

“I see we finished second in the C Division last season so it would be amazing to go one better in 2020 and see Ashburton CC promoted,” said Martin.

“I couldn't be more excited to head over and get the season under way

"I have heard only great things about the club and the area and can't wait to get stuck in helping the club on and off the field.”

From closer to home Ashes have snapped up hard-hitting left-hander Ian Messom, who has been with A Division side Budleigh Salterton since 2017.

Messom recently moved to Totnes having previously chalked up over 2,500 runs for Beddington in the Surrey League, and around 1,000 more in 35 innings for Budleigh Salterton at 1st and 2nd XI level.

Ian Gamble, the former Exmouth and Sidmouth batsman, was a team-mate of Messom’s at Beddington.

Ashley Berry, the Ashburton captain, said both signings meet a need in the team.

“Fergus looks a fine proposition and is exactly what we were looking for,” said Berry, who has been reappointed for a sixth successive season.

“With his experience both on and off the pitch, I am sure Fergus will be a fantastic addition.

“Ian will also ensure we continue to bat positively, and deep into our innings.”

Indoor training starts on Sunday, March 15 at the South Dartmoor Community College just a six-hit away from the club. Training times are 10am-noon.

Pre-season warm-up games have been arranged against Exeter (April 19), Budleigh (April 25) and Chagford (April 26). The serious stuff starts on May 2 when Ashburton visit newly promoted Paignton 2ndXI.
