2003 BROCKMAN CUP FINAL

CRICKET: Richard Ward was named Man of the Match as Brixham cruised to a 45-run win over Kingskerswell in last night’s Brockman Cup final at Torquay Recreation Ground.

Match adjudicator Richard Hussey was left with an easy task after Ward hammered 87 of just 70 balls as Brixham racked up 171 for three in their 20 overs.

Ward looked like going on to make a century before going for one big hit too many — he already had 11 boundaries in the book — and seeing Mike Noble knock back his stumps.

Chris Johnson (27) shared a stand of exactly 80 with Ward and it was their seven overs together which put the game beyond Kerswell’s reach.

Kerswell were faced with making more than eight an over to have any sort of chance — and at 14 for three things looked grim.

By the ten-over mark they were becalmed on 35 for three and out of the running.

Paul Harding plundered some indifferent back-up bowling from Brixham to make an unbeaten 71, but it was all in a lost cause as Kerswell closed on 126 for six.

Brixham 171-3 (R Ward 87, G Northcott 30, C Johnson 27), Kingskerswell 126-6 (P Harding 71; J Hyde 2-9, S Caunter 2-27). Brixham bt Kingskerswell by 45 runs.
