PLYMPTON got their tactics spot-on to beat Thorverton by 40-runs in a rain-affected encounter at Harewood Park.

Harry Kandampully had 52 in Plympton’s running total of 112 for three. After he went Tino Mutombodzi (26), Justin Wubbeling (25) and Ollie Goulder (24) kept the board flicking over.

Jake Choules, the Thorverton captain, rotated his bowlers well and would have been happy dismissing Plympton for 210.

Ben Slaviero (4-38) was the leading wicket taker. Choules, George Daldorph and Alex Jopling (2-38) all cost less than four an over.

Thorverton started off chasing 211 to win. After the first break for rain the target came down to 178. A third stoppage killed the game off.

Ben Coe (31) and Jason van der Meulen (53) were Thorverton’s main run getters in the final total of 117 for four.

Mutombodzi spun out three batters for 37 runs, which helped put Plympton in the driving seat before the rain came.

“We felt we were in the game with 40 overs of spin and a turning pitch – and we were right,” said Jonty Walliker, the Plympton vice-captain.

“Clouds and rain were rolling in and it was paramount we kept ahead on Duckworth-Lewis.

“Despite a strong innings from van der Meulen, we stayed ahead of the game and a great spell from Tino won it for us.

“Eventually the rain was the winner but, luckily, we raced through our overs and kept above the rate.

“Winning ugly was the perfect description of the result.”

Choules said if losing a game Thorverton were poised to win was not bad enough, the handful of points earned made it even worse.

“The rain was really frustrating as I felt we were the better side on the day and in control of the chase both when we were chasing the overall total and the revised total” said Choules.

“Duckworth-Lewis  just seemed like a lottery that jumped around every over with seemingly no logic to it.

“We were certainly better than the seven bonus points awarded. I wonder if the league need to look at revising when bonus points are awarded in rain-affected games when the total is adjusted?

“It was nearly impossible for us to get any more batting points due to the revised targets and weather.”
