CORNWOOD’S Jack Brown performed the hat-trick to speed his side to a 37-run win over ailing South Devon.

Cornwood set South Devon 167 to win, which was whittled down 153 after a break for rain, and the visitors were 93 for six when Brown dismissed Noah Rider for a top score of 30.

Toby Goodman and Dan Duke went in successive balls as 93 for six became 93 for nine in a hurry.

Last pair Dillip Salinda (18no) and Lahiru Samaradivakara (5) kept Cornwood in the field for another 22 runs before Brown snared the latter lbw to finish with match figures of four for nine.

Andy Bees did the damage at the top of the order where he took four South Devon wickets for just 16 runs.

Skipper Robin Dart top scored for his side with 44 and there were useful contributions from Duncan Boase (25) and Noah Carlisle (23).

Samaradivakara (3-32) posted South Devon’s best bowling figures. James Allen, John Barlow and Rider all had two wickets each.

Winning skipper Dart said he was pleased to pick-up a result that keeps Cornwood in touch with the top three.

Dart had been aiming for a greater total than 167, but praised his bowlers for making it a winning total.

“With unsettled weather about the plan was to go out and score quickly in case we ended up losing overs,” said Dart.

“I fancied 180 would be a good score on a great track, but with 15 overs left and 167 on the board, we were slightly disappointed not to get over 200 and get full batting points.

“We made an Indifferent start with the ball, giving away too many four balls, but Andy Bees, Matt Tamsett and Jack Brown showed their class and halted any progression South Devon could make.”

YELVERTON came a proper cropper at Paignton, where they crashed to a nine-wicket defeat.

Dave Ackford (23) and Andy Birkett (22) gave Yelverton a solid start, but from 67 for one they slumped to 84 for six as Rory Medlock (3-43) spun through the middle order.

James Cooper with 26, aided and abetted by Joe Panes (17) and Hadleigh Scott-Kirk (10) got the running total up to 138 for seven. Rio Koyikara (3-7) mopped-up the bottom order to dismiss Yelverton for 141.

Paignton had the runs knocked-off inside 22 overs thanks to second-wicket pair Connor Bryan (55) and Medlock (50), who put on 101 unbroken.

PLYMSTOCK’S unbeaten record at the top of the C Division West is now a thing of the past after they lost by 58 runs to Teignmouth & Shaldon.

But they remain comfortably clear of second-placed Plymouth 2nd XI who are 17 points behind despite their win over Ashburton.

Runs almost all the way down the order took Teignmouth & Shaldon to 191 for nine before their overs ran out.

Karl Blackburn top scored with 32 for T&S, Tom Adamson made 31, Curtis Hayes hit 25 and there were a handful of chip-ins in the teens.

Three wickets each for Tom Mitch (3-15) and Alex Karvelas (3-42) were the bowling highlights for Plymstock.

Plymstock, who were without talismanic all-rounder Hal Kerton, needed someone in the top six or seven to make build on what Josh Sumner (17) and James Nicholls (36) started. It didn’t happen.

From 109 for five when Mitch was dismissed for a next best of 18, Plymstock faded away to 133 all out.

Ruben Minaar returned for a second stint to finish with four Plymstock wickets for 33 runs , Ross Abraham had three for 42 and Tom Adamson finished off the stragglers with two for 11.

Nicholls, the Plymstock captain, was phlegmatic after his side’s first loss of the season.

“Teignmouth & Shaldon had by far the best of the wicket which was very, very dry,” said Nicholls. “But saying that they bowled and we gave away a few soft dismissals.

“Not too much damage done. Hal and Robbie Cunningham are both back this week and we will go again.”

HARRY Stephenson hit a match-winning 71 in Plymouth 2nd XI’s three-wicket win over Ashburton.

Plymouth were 18 for two chasing 207 to win when Stephenson went in and were 171 for six when he was dismissed by Chris Yeo (4-47).

Tom Hughes (22), Nathan Birks (24) and Sam White (20) were the supporting acts. Aziz Rahmanzai (16no) and Jamie Henwood (18no) brought the curtain down on the chase with nine balls to spare.

Ashburton’s total of 206 for nine was more than they looked like getting to after Rahmanzai (3-47) and Dan Rogers (2-20) had reduced them to 37 for five.

Dan Coles dug in for 53 and put on 80 for the sixth wicket with skipper Steve Edmonds (32). Matt Churchill (43) and Will Coon (17no) kept the fightback going.

STOKE Gabriel made it three wins on the trot on the way up to fourth spot in the C West table when they defeated Kingsbridge by 96 runs.

Jake Robinson top scored with 52 in a Stoke total of 215 for eight that skipper Jack Tolley felt was better than it appeared in difficult batting conditions.

Robinson and Dan Bullock (42) posted104 for the third wicket after opener Ben Robinson had made 21.

Tolley (37) and Chris Harrison (19no) nudged the score towards 200.

Freddie Weir (3-54) was Kingsbridge’s main wicket taker. Adi Maxwell (2-42), Neil Peach (1-29) and Bhanu de Silva (1-34) bowled effectively.

Kingsbridge got to 83 for three without too many issues, then went into a tail-spin as wickets tumbled Bullock (2-39), Harrison Yeates (2-26) and finally Andy Ball (4-13).

Six wickets fell for 16 runs scored as Kingsbridge collapsed to 99 for nine. Last pair Weir and Peach got the total up to 119 before Ball wrapped things up.

Opener James Westlake (27) made the most runs from the bat. Extras topped the total up by 40!
