Match One - Devon v Hampshire (30.5.16)

Our first National Championship match against Hampshire was held on a sunny Bank Holiday Monday (30th May), at Barton Cricket Club. It was to be a match of almost complete symmetry: both losing wickets in the first over; unable to make vital runs down the order but some sparkling bowling from both teams.

Following the toss that Devon U15 girls won, Hampshire were put into bat. Opener Charlie Dean (87) put on a fine batting display with her 13 boundaries, ably supported by Ella Chandler (27); and despite their middle and lower order collapse, put on 162. Devon's showed consistency with bowling from Maddie Holifield (8-0-38-4) and Becca Halliday (5.5-2-28-4). Unfortunately Devon's slower bowlers were rather taken advantage of in the middle of the innings; but bringing both Maddie and Becca back put paid to Hampshire's innings. They were all out for 162 in the 36áµ—Ê° over.

Devon's reply almost mirrored the Hampshire's innings, losing their first wicket in the first over and then the second a couple of overs later. However Daisy Meadowcroft (69) steadied the Devon's innings with both Sophie Florides (10) and Rose Ball (28), but sadly the lower order we unable to make the runs required. Anita Ansar (6.1-1-18-4), Charlie Dean (8-1-16-2) and Emma Bentall (5-0-23-2) were to do the damage and Devon were bowled out in the 37áµ—Ê° over for 145; losing by 17 runs.
