ALPHINGTON took over at the top of the C Division West thanks to a four-wicket win over bottom side Chelston & Kingskerswell.

Alphington’s bowlers dominated as Chelston & Kingskerswell were skittled out for 104, their last five wickets going for 21 runs.

Spinner Paul James took five for 25 and there were two wickets each for Ashley Green (2-34) and Tom Bath (2-22)

Alphington made a racing start through Dave Haysom (41) and Bath, (24) who put on 65.

Then wickets started to tumble and Alphington were glad of James’ 32 not out for getting them home.

Victory lifted Alphington two points ahead of former leaders Abbotskerswell, who lost at Kingsbridge and drop back to second.

Alphington face an altogether tougher proposition this Saturday as they entertain promotion rivals Babbacombe.

“You can only play what is in front of you and our last two games – Chelston and Plymouth CS&R – have been against sides struggling at the wrong end of the table,” said Alphas’ skipper Stuart Shaw.

“We know Babbacombe will be a lot tougher and we have to be prepared for that.

“We will need to be a lot more focussed as I doubt Babbacombe will let us off the hook if we are 83 for six again.”
