THORVERTON are off the mark at last in the B Division following a 28-run win over fellow strugglers Dartington & Totnes.

Opener George Greed found some form and hit a top score of 83 in Thorverton’s total of 194 for eight.

Darts were all out for 166 in reply with four wickets falling to Adriane Morrison and three to Gillam Crouch.

Thorverton remain in the bottom three relegation places, but can do something about that if they beat winless South Devon this Saturday.

Greed’s knock was the glue that held everything together for Thorverton. A stand of 89 with Will Denford (36) got them up to 124 for three and he kept going until the penultimate over when Will Gornall (2-41) winkled him out.

Morrison (21) and James Maxwell (19) both chipped in to he final total.

Pick of the bowlers for D&T was veteran spinner Chris Cook with four for 48 from eight overs.

D&T lost both openers for four on the board – both falling to South African paceman Morrison (4-35). Harold Stevenson went first, followed by University of Exeter and England Youth hockey player Oliver Payne.

Ed Verrall (66) and Cook (20) batted D&T back into the game and at 113 for three it was game on. Then Crouch, captain for the day Paul Fielder (2-38) and the returning Morrison started whittling away at the middle order.

Glenn Colegate (18) and Alex Hartridge (20) resisted but the last five wickets went for 27 runs as D&T folded.

Fielder, who was filling in for the absent Dave Baldock, said the game went better than expected after being put in on green top.

“I felt it wouldn’t be easy to bat in the first innings, but George showed his class and his stand with Will set us up to push on in the last 10,” said Fielder.

“I thought 180 would be a good score so I was more than happy with 194.

Gill Crouch returned to the team to open the bowling with Adriane and it was great to see a tight opening spell from them both.

“Jake Choules bowled a tight nine and bowling in tandem with me we managed to squeeze the middle overs well.

“We stuck together and fielded tightly.”
