DAY ONESCORECARD

DEVON were in trouble at Eastnor at the end of the second day of their game against Herefordshire.

When rain stopped play early on day one, Herefordshire were 188 for nine.

Devon had to wait until shortly before five o’clock to get back out and finish the job, Charlie Miles snaring last man Alex Wilkinson lbw.

Miles finished with three for 29, which placed him just behind Josh King (3-18) on the Devon bowling honours board for the first innings.

Faced with Herefordshire’s 199 all out, Devon were 71 for eight at last night’s close, still 128 runs in arrears.

The dismal litany started with Dylan Penberthy’s departure at 15 and wasn’t improved by skipper Matt Thompson going at 21.

Wilkinson then took three wickets in successive overs as Matt Golding, Jack Dart and Josh Bess sloped off.

Devon were 37 for five when Wilkinson twanged Bess’s stumps and things couldn’t get much worse, could they?

Joe Hagan-Burt, the debutant from Plymouth was showing some stickability, but Justin Yau fell caught behind to Dan Conway and Devon were 46 for six.

Worse was to come as Toby Codd, who bowled well on day one, was caught on the mid-wicket boundary going after Peter Burgoyne.

And Josh Bess, another bowling success on day one, blotted his copybook by getting out caught at long-on.

Jamie Drew and Hagan-Burt (14no) blocked out the final over to ensure there were no more mishaps.

Herefordshire 199 (C J Whittock 43, D J R Exall 31, P I Burgoyne 31; J V King 3-18, C L Miles 3-29), Devon 71-8 (A R Wilkinson 4-17, P I Burgoyne 2-11). Devon (4pts), Herefordshire (4).
