CHAGFORD are hovering just above the C Division drop zone after sustaining a five-wicket defeat in the derby clash with Bridestowe.

Opener James Fulner made 40 of the first 55 on the board  in a patchy batting display by Chagford.

After Fulner was second out to Sam Ewen – he took six wickets for just eight runs – Chagford simply fell apart.

With a little prompting from Naz Khan, Bridestowe reduced Chagford from 55 for one to 69 for nine.

Five batters didn’t make a run between them and only David Penberthy showed any stickability.,

Penberthy (40) and last man Rhys Holland (6no) put on 45 for the last wicket as Chagford scraped up 114 all out.

Ewen’s figures were a league record for the division – and he could have done even better.

“He bowled with good pace and was helped by some great catching behind the wicket, particularly from brother Pat with the gloves,” said skipper Gary Sizmur.

“It could have been even better as at one stage he had unbelievable figures of 5-5-6-0.”

Bridestowe lost Phil Hatton on 19 to Kenton Vos, but cruised to 66 for two with Gary Sizmur (53) leading the way against one of his former clubs.

Sizmur was out with 14 needed , which was largely whittled away by Khan (10no).
