ABBOTSKERSWELL beat Alphington by 71 runs in the top-of-the-table clash to snatch the C Division West leadership for themselves.

It was neck-and-neck going into the game with the teams level on 112 points each. Not anymore.

Abbots took maximum batting points in a total of 271 for eight, then limited Alphington to 200 for six in reply.

Charlie Hill’s side are now nine points clear at the top with the skipper looking to push on to promotion.

“With 15 overs to go they gave up the chase, but we couldn't pick up those last few wickets to walk away with full points,” said Hill.

“I was really impressed with the maturity of our young guys, playing against a very experienced Alphington team.

“We held our nerve to come away with a win - hopefully more to come.”

Charlie Mitchell (79) and Connor Adams (56) got Abbots up and running with stand of 145. Brett Williams topped it up with 67.

Alphas skipper Stuart Shaw took three Abbots’ wickets for 36 runs.

The Halse brothers – Nick (63) and Mark (43) – both made runs for Alphington against their former club.

Andy Shepherd (33) chipped in, but Alphas couldn’t keep up with the asking rate.

Elliot Adams had two for 10 from six overs to turn the screw on the home side.

Matt Beasant’s nine overs for 23 runs helped Abbots but the result beyond doubt.

Alphas skipper Shaw said his side may have lost a battle, but they haven’t lost the war.

“I said before the game the result wouldn’t decide anything as there is a long way to go,” said Shaw.

“We can’t have any complaints at all as the best side won and won well.

“I am looking forward to going down there later in the season and getting the points back.

“Neither of the James brothers were available for this one, but Abbots will notice the difference in us when we have them available.”
