TORQUAY completed a rare double over Bay rivals Brixham, beating them by 10 wickets for the second time this season.

Brixham, bottom of the table but seemingly on the up after beating Plymouth last time out, were bowled out for 82.

It was a marginal improvement on the first meeting between them and Torquay when Brixham were dismissed for 60.

Brixham never got any sort of foothold in the game and their best partnership was one of 22 between Lee Upham and Dan Tucker for the ninth wicket.

Torquay seamer Joe Thompson followed his seven for 15 in the first encounter between the sides with three more for 35 to start the Brixham slide.

Mitch Pugh got into the middle order as Brixham collapsed in a hurry.

Five wickets went for one run added as Brixham went from 49 for three to 51 for eight.

Upham (16) and Tucker (5) stuck it out for four overs before Pugh bowled the latter.

The run chase was perfunctory as Torquay were home and dry inside 15 overs.

Pugh rattled off 57 not out mostly in boundaries – 11 fours and a six – and Reid Mawdsley made 18 at the other end.

Having been on the wrong end of a 10-wicket defeat themselves against Cornwood seven days earlier, it was the sort of result winning captain Justin Yau was looking for to start climbing the table.

“Hopefully we can really kick on now for the rest of the season,” said Yau.

“It was a thoroughly professional job and we did the basics really well.

“All our bowlers were a handful on a tough wicket and then Mitch and Reid batted really well to get us home.”

Yau’s first priority is getting Torquay up the table and the 20-point gap between them and the drop zone isn’t enough.

“It's a tight division this year and we need a few more wins to create more daylight from the bottom two,” said Yau.

“Without being disrespectful, we expect most teams to beat Brixham in the second half of the season so this victory makes very little difference in the grand scheme of things.

“What it does do is build confidence which is vital as we hit the turn of the season.”
