Dom Bess - England calls

DEVON and Exeter duo Dom Bess and Ben Green have both been named in the England U19 squad for the forthcoming one-day series against Sri Lanka.

England have a programme of one and four-day games against the tourists and have named two separate squads.

Bess and Green are both in the one-day squad, who have three games against the tourists on August 10, 13 and 16 at Wormsley, Chelmsford and Canterbury.

Green has been part of the Under-19 set up for a couple of years in both formats of the game.

Ordinarily, Green would have been in both squads, but he is currently getting over a foot injury.

“We have agreed with Somerset that Ben Green, who is recovering after a foot operation, should not be considered for the four-day matches, and would be better building up his fitness in some second team games to be ready for our 50-over matches,” said David Graveney, who chairs the England Development Programme.

This has been a breakthough season for Bess, who spent much of last winter at the Darren Lehmann Academy in Australia working on his game.

Bess has played regularly for Devon and Somerset 2nd XI and made his First Class debut recently against the touring Pakistanis.

Green and Bess started out in the Devon youth system before being picked up by Somerset.

England Under-19s, under the supervision of the head of the EDP Andy Hurry, will meet up for a two-day match against Unicorns in Loughborough on July 21-22, before facing Sri Lanka in the first of the two four-day games at Fenners, the University Cricket Ground in Cambridge.

Martin Webb, the long-time head of youth cricket in Devon, said to have two of the county’s young players in the England Under-19 set-up as ‘an outstanding achievement’.

He added: “Devon is very strong across the piece in many age groups at the moment with more players making a name for themselves.”

One of those players clearly making a name for himself is Tom Lammonby, who also plays for Exeter and is part of the Somerset Academy.

Lammonby, 16,  has been offered a place in the England Developing Player Programme and hooks up with the squad next week for a two day game against Sri Lanka U19s.

Graveney rang him today (Tuesday) to say he had been picked.

The Exeter School pupil celebrated in stytle today by hammering a century for Devon U17s against Gloucestershire.
