BRAUNTON are looking anxiously over their shoulders after a six-wicket defeat at South Devon left them hovering above the drop zone.

South Devon, who didn’t win a game in the first seven weeks of the season, have now won three in a row.

South Devon are still in the bottom three, but are only three points behind Braunton now.

Opener Alfie Huxtable top scored for Braunton with 57 in their total of 203 all out.

Huxtable was second out at 108 – he and Neil Bettis (29) put on 96 for the second wicket – with Jon Baglow next best with 33 batting at ten.

Mark Andrews got on with it first up for South Devon, making 34 of the first 43 on the board.

Dave Knowles masterminded the rest of the run chase, batting through for an unbeaten 74.

Bettis (3-50) briefly slowed the South Devon chase, but Knowles kept his cool and stands of 73 with Paul Hooper (30) and 66 unbroken with Martin (30) got the job done.

Braunton’s back-up bowling wasn’t at its best. Callum Mitchell and Jon Higgs had short but costly spells.

Braunton skipper Baglow said South Devon didn’t win as comfortably as it appears on paper.

“We tried to be positive by batting first and at109 for twoat drinks we felt 250 would be a potential score,” said Baglow.

“We were 40 for five in the next 10 overs and only just managed to get 200.

“It was touch and go for a long time but Knowles batted sensibly, we struggled to contain and the weather in the end meant bowling was tough.

“No excuses though, we weren't good enough on the day.”
