The DCB Under 15 Inter District Competition
for The Considine Cup
2008 Champions The East

Heavy drizzle delayed the start of the game between the West and the East, and was subsequently reduced to 45 overs a side. West Devon won the toss and took to the field. The West then made an early break through with Matthew Kidd removing  T.Cole. Then a stand of 56 between A Brown and R Glass privided the East with a good solid base, but Kidd struck again and removed R.Glass for (35). After a slow start Brown started to hit the boundary and top scored with (53) hitting five fours and a six. When Brown was dismissed, brilliantly caught and bowled by Chris Sanders (1-8) the East were 118-4. A useful contribution from S Reddick (35) towards the end of the innings enabled the East to total 177-7. Pick of the home bowlers was Kidd (3-23) and Dan Windsor (1-41). The West then set about the run chase but lost an early wicket and found themselves 5-1.  A stand of 41 between Rob Dart (20) and Ryan Skinner (19) placed them in a good position. However after some very tight bowling from the visitors bowlers the West lost three quick wickets for only 7 runs and found themselves 63-4. Still wickets continued to fall but they managed to force a draw holding on at the end to finish on 115-8. M Plowman finished with figures of (3-22) and M Hague (2-23).

On a damp track and soaking wet outfield for the North/South game as South Devon won the important toss and asked North to bat first. In a very poor batting effort the only highlight was a fine knock by Dominic Bracher (41) who was aided only by Hatherleigh boys Robbie Chapman (16) and Andy Collier (9). Tom Mitcham (11)and Barney Huxtable (10) had earlier looked set but got out to loose shots and so the meagre total 119 was set. The pick of the bowling was Connor Bryan who bowled a good line and length. Although the sun had now come out and the outfield dried the North Devon lads were sure they could defend the total if the bowling and fielding were tight. To their credit the performance in the field was excellent and but for a good partnership between Bryan and Will Matthewman and then Chris Kelmere there was little resistance. All the bowlers took heed of the need for line and length and pick of the bunch was debutant Steven Miles (Hatherleigh)who ended up with the remarkable figures of 5 for 9 off 8 overs. South Devon were eventually all out for 84 in the 43rd over.

It was an extremely close game between the East and the South with the honours being shaded by the East. A solid bowling performance saw the South all out for 146. Pick of the bowlers was Jack Lily D’cruz with 2 for 34 from 10 and Foyez Rahman 3 for 17 from 10. Highlight of the South’s batting was an excellent 44 from R Ashworth.

Chasing 147 at just under 3 per over, wickets fell steadily, only being held up by Matt Blakeney (21) and Will Steward (32). The crucial partnership being the 10th wicket stand of 17 between Jack Lily D’Cruz (17*) and Adam Holmes (12*.). The South bowled well and some excellent catching by Hodgson meant that the East had to work hard for every run. The South’s best bowler was W Mathewman with 3 for 26 from 10. The East pulled off the closest of wins with 5.3 overs to spare, man of the match for the East was Jack Lily D’cruz for his solid performance with the ball and a very assured and watchful knock of undefeated 17 to steer the East home.

East v North

North 178 (D.Bracher 20, B.Huxtable 40, J.Ashmore 43, M.Plowman 6-14, R.Glass 3-33)

East A.Brown: North

The East / North fixture was a very good game of cricket, which for the first 25 overs looked to be going the way of the North. At this stage the North were on 121 for 4 and looked set to post a big score. B Huxtable (40) and J Asmore (43) looked well set. Then the greatest wicket taker of all – drinks break. Immediately after drinks, Alex Brown deployed the spin of Ryan Glass.

This dried the runs up and then Ryan took two wickets in one over. All of a sudden the East woke up to their task. The fielding improved, the enthusiasm returned and the East regained the upper hand. Matt Plowman then went to work on the North’s batsman with two spells of superb bowling, finishing with figures of 8.3 overs, 3 maidens, 6 for 14. Ryan Glass kept the other end quiet, finishing with 10-2-33-3.

In the end, the North were all out for 178. A good return for the East after a poor start. The reply was initially faltering until Alex Brown took control with a masterful innings of 95 not out. His main support came from Foyez Rahman who finished on 26 not out. These two saw the East to 179 for 5 with 10 overs to spare, giving the East their second win and securing the District Under 15’s title for 2008.
