D Division East round-up – week three: Sidmouth pair Trego and Docherty savage Cullompton bowling

Six of the best! Ross Treleaven, whose six-wicket haul was instrumental in the Shells

CULLOMPTON were on the receiving end of a 323-run walloping when they encountered Sidmouth 2nd XI in the D Division East.

Sidmouth raced along to a massive total of 432 for five in 45 overs, then skittled Cullompton for 109 in reply.

Will Goodall (53) and Charlie Brock (93) posted 158 for Sidmouth’s first wicket – and that was just the start of Cully’s woes.

Robbie Powell added 41 in a hurry as a warm-up act for Davis Trego and James Docherty, who launched a brutal assault on the home side’s bowling.

Trego belted eight fours and the same number of sixes while totting-up 111 from just 60 balls faced. He is the son of former Somerset all-rounder Peter Trego.

Docherty’s 99 was even more destructive. He faced just 40 balls. Six went for four and nine disappeared over the ropes for six.

A stand of 117 between Docherty and Trego ended when Sidhaarth Arulvendan had the latter stumped by Euan Tinley. Docherty added another 68 with Pat Hambly, whose contribution to the partnership was just six runs.

Cullompton’s reply lasted 22.3 overs with opener Lee Hooper making a top score of 36. They lost their last five wickets for 16 runs.

Matt Huntley topped the bowling stats for Sidmouth with three for 20. Docherty chipped in with two for 16.

SHOBROOKE Park were edged out by a mere seven runs by Topsham St James.

It was Shobrooke’s first league defeat of the season and cost them the D East leadership, which now belongs to Sidmouth 2nd XI.

Topsham were in all sorts of trouble at 48 for six after an early going over from Fergus Campey (3-13) and Chris Simpson (2-22).

Matt Williams laboured long and hard over his 43, which came off 82 balls, that helped the Shells reach 122 all out. Shobrooke skipper Chris Ford (3-17) tidied up the lower-order batters.

Shobrooke fared little better when their turn came to bat as they subsided from 41 without loss to 64 for five. Simpson’s 23 was as good as it got.

Ford (16) and former skipper Ben Trenaman (16) tried to haul things round, but couldn’t go all the way.

BRAUNTON 2nd XI overwhelmed visiting Budleigh Salterton 2nd XI by 87 runs to claim their first league win of the summer.

Pete Needham top scored with 64 for Braunton in their total of 224 all out. His stand of 86 with Steve Hunt (39) was the best of the innings. Andy Paddison chipped in with 21.

Oscar Simms (3-43) had Hunt and Needham in his collection. Joel Murphy and Kamalaka Posapalli had two wickets each.

Budleigh will look back at the period when they slipped from 64 for three to 82 for seven as where the match was lost. Joe Mullens (3-44) aided and abetted by Paddison (2-22) and Luan Matthews de Menezes (2-8) were mostly responsible.

Super veteran Neil Murrin (39), skipper Harvey Shipton (38) and Posapalli (26) made the only scores of note as Budleigh subsided to 137 all out.

BARNSTAPLE & Pilton made Ottery St Mary 2nd XI work hard for a two-wicket win in the D Division East.Sophi Bramdon – four wickets in Ottery's win over B&P

Defeat may have cost B&P a share of top spot in the early table, but it was a close-run thing that went down to the final over.

Matt Newton (57) made the only score above 20 for Barnstaple & Pilton in an all-out total of 175.

Pick of the bowling figures for Ottery with four for 37 was Sophie Bramdon. Eddy Kerr and Alex Newman had two each.

Ottery’s run chase veered from 83 for two to 125 for six as Jimmer Thomas (2-30), George Elnaugh (2-28) and Joe Hastie (2-32) got stuck into the middle order.

Man of the moment for Ottery was Evan Rhys, whose cautious 40 took them within five runs of victory.

NORTH Devon 2nd XI remain winless at the foot of the D East table following an eight-wicket home reversal by Whimple.

The North Devon total of 168 all out was polished off by Whimple with more than 10 overs in hand.

Richard Clarke, who top scored on 41, was one of four wickets to tumble while North Devon laboured from 97 for three to 110 for seven. Freddie Tucker (27) gave the final tally some respectability.

Wickets were shared between Mitch Brooker (3-43), Jamie Withers (2-41) and Andrew Codling, who had two for 21 from nine overs.

The result was never in any doubt once Luke Phillips (78) and Nathan Kidd (39) put on 128 for Whimple’s first wicket. Brooker (24) and Will Bardot were the not-out batters at the end.
