Topsham St James opener Dan Croxall, who top sxcoed with 87 against North Devon 2nd XI

TOPSHAM St James inflicted a 163-run drubbing on D East tail-enders North Devon 2nd XI.

It was the Instow outfits fourth straight defeat in the league and leaves them rock bottom in the table.

The Shells grand total of 218 for six was set-up by a stand of 142 between openers Dan Croxall (87) and Declan Wardell (75). It was bits and pieces in the final 15 overs with no one making more than Richard Milton (14).

Simon Wright (2-45) was the lone North Devon bowler with more than one wicket. Jools Hughes (1-24) kept the runs down.

North Devon lost opener Navindu Vanderbona in the first over and Richard Clarke soon after.

Josh Arthur (14) and Regina Lilii (14) took the North Devon reply to 34 for two, when the former was bowled by Brian Jeary.

SIDMOUTH 2nd XI closed-out a slender 10-run win over Barnstaple & Pilton in a high-scoring clash on the Fortfield

Davis Trego’s run of form with the bat for early front runners Sidmouth continued with a top score of 55 in their total of 257 for seven.

After Will Goodall (30) and Charlie Brock (39) got Sidmouth away to a 73-run start, Trego kept the board ticking over in stands of 58 with David Watkins (22) and 51 with skipper James Docherty (33). Patrick Hambly was 37 not out at the end.

Lee Cole (0-37) and James Roe (2-34) bowled containing nine-over spells for B&P. Joe Hastie’s three-for-38 bag included Trego.

Roe led the early inroads into B&P’s target with 89. Tom Poole (61) joined him for a stand of 101 for the fifth wicket that reduced the arrears to 84 with eight overs to go. Although Andrew Fewings (39) kept the runs coming, 10 an over to win proved just a few too many as George Bower (4-47) and Cameron Neame put the ball on the spot when it mattered.

Fourteen to win from Docherty’s final over proved just a few too many for B&P, who ran out of time on 247 for eight.

Braunton’s prospects looked gloomy at 23 for four for – Andrew Codling (2-20) and Ollie Whitton (3-21) posing problems with the ball ­– but Ian Roberts (36no) led a fight back to 56 for four.

There was no signs of the carnage to come when J Withers came into the Whimple attack and sent down an eight-ball over for starters.

Ed Holmes (15) was Withers’ (4-30) first scalp and after that it was downhill all the way to 78 all out.

Whimple’s run chase was a perfunctory affair that lasted just 14.2 overs. Luke Phillips was the man out for 50 with 13 needed to win. Nathan Kidd (21no) and Mitch Brooker (12no) finished the job.

Opener Chris Simpson played the anchorman role for Shobrooke with 84 off 106 balls – 10 fours, one six – towards a total of 236 all out.

Simpson was at one end during stands that took the total to 164 for four. Fergus Campey and Chris Ford both made 26 in support.

Sophie Brandom topped the bowling stats for Ottery with four for 58. It was her secnd successive four-wicket haul in the league. Eddy Kerr (3-30) got into the bottom half of the order.

Howell Brandwood (5-32) and Xavier Warmbrunn (3-5) were the bowlers who did the damage as Ottery were skittled out for 89. Brandwood took three wickets in four balls during the home side’s collapse.

Dan Flower’s 17 was as good as it got. Five batters did not manage a run between them.

Shobrooke remain joint second in the table with Whimple behind early frontrunners Sidmouth 2nd XI.

Budleigh were second from bottom going into the game – Cullompton were immediately above them – but the teams have changed places as a consequence of this result.

Opener Lee Hooper dug in for a top score of 39 in Cullompton’s all-out total of 114.

Significant partnerships were thin on the ground for Cully with Hooper’s opening stand of 23 with Sidhaarth Arulvendan (13) never bettered.

Joe Marley (5-15) spun his way to a five-wicket haul for Budleigh, and there were three wickets for Alex Roper.

Budleigh occupied exactly 22 overs knocking off the runs. Jack England (40) was the man out on 55. Mark Troman (19no) and Lee Russell (37no) saw it through to the end.
