Tavistock beat Teignmouth & Shaldon 2nd XI by 95 runs | Lewis 'five-fer' and Webber ton enough to grab victory

By OLLIE SMITH
MARC Lewis produced a player-of-the-match performance as his Tavistock 2nd XI secured an away win at their Teignmouth & Shaldon counterparts by 95 runs.
The away side chose to bat after winning the toss, and after losing three wickets for less than 50 runs, the two Marcs, Webber and Lewis, took to the crease. A 139-run partnership followed, before Lewis was out on 56 at exactly a run a ball; he had scored eight fours in his knock.
Webber kept going, however, taking 124 runs off Teignmouth from just 88 deliveries, including 18 fours and one six, before he ran out of partners. None of the other incoming Tavistock batters made more than 14, but the damage was done with Webber and Lewis’ century stand.
They finished on 297 with two overs to go, young Bobby Murfin cleaned up the Tavistock tail, taking his maiden five-wicket haul, finishing with 5-52 from eight overs.
An opening partnership worth 71 set Teignmouth’s innings up, before Ryan Burke dismissed both batters. Burke tore through the top order, taking the wicketA of all top four batters.
Lewis was the seventh bowler used by Tavistock, but was certainly the most effective. He took five Teignmouth wickets from just five and a half overs, and kept the run rate to less than a run a ball, where it needed to be just shy of sevens.
Lewis, despite his claim for player-of-the-match, was quick to praise the Teignmouth side, “Credit to them [Teignmouth] though who have some good players, particularly the young lads who opened the bowling. They had us in trouble early on.”
“It’s great to get another win: That’s three on the bounce now. It was nice to contribute with runs and wickets.”
Lewis is now just two wickets shy of last season’s final total, and he has already cleared his run total for 2024, he’s putting that down to a run in the Tavistock 1st XI at the back end of last season.
“Nothing changed over the winter, I just tried to stay fit, running a bit and stay injury free,” he said.
“I had a few games in the firsts last year, and it went well. Knowing you can do it at a higher level gives you a bit more confidence, and perhaps that’s just showing through this season.
“It’s been a case of doing the simple things well, have fun, and then the rest will fall in place.”
Tavistock’s 1st XI are currently top of the A Division, and the 2nd XI are sat in third of the E Division West. Lewis said the atmosphere at the club is a big contributor to where they are now.
“There’s a real buzz around the club and the positive environment makes it easy to go out and put in these sorts of performances,” said Lewis.
“Both teams are doing really well at the right end of the tables. Everything is going right off the pitch, so when that happens, it is easy for it to go well on it too.
“I’m not sure we’ve hit top gear yet either, there have been some great individual performances so far, and it is a really great group of lads.”
