Tolchards DCL round-up – week six: Paignton 2nd XI crush Plymstock 2nd XI by eight wickets | Degg takes batting average to 293

IT was a soggy Saturday in the Tolchards DCL as rain washed out cricket in all 17 divisions of the competition.
Only seven games got under way – and just four of them were played to a finish!
Among the casualties was the A Division meeting between Torquay & Kingskerswell and Kilmington on the Recreation Ground.
The game got as far as the 11th over when the second stoppage of the afternoon brought a terminal halt to proceedings with Kilmington on 46 for one.
The man out was Kilmington opener Tom Gooding (28), who was dismissed by Chris Kelmere.
Torquay & Kingskerswell will hope for better weather this Saturday when they pay a visit to Plympton.
PAIGNTON 2nd XI completed their game against Plymstock at Queen’s Park, where the visitors were crushed by eight wickets.
It was a sixth loss on the trot for Plymstock, who are already 35 points adrift at the bottom of the C West table and need to start winning soon.
This Saturday’s game against Brixham would be an ideal starting point as they are one of the teams directly above them.
Plymstock were held to 105 for six in a 25-over game at Queen’s Park, which always looked on the shy side.
BATTED THROUGH
Opener Dave Ling batted from start to finish for 28 not out. His stand of 39 with Mamun Chowdhurry (21) for the first wicket was as good as it got. Twenty-five extras helped.
Paignton bowler Mark Gilmour cashed in during the dash for runs in the final few overs with three wickets in seven balls for match figures of four for 19.
Stephen George, who opened the bowling and the batting for Paignton, top scored with 56 not out during the chase.
George and Brenton Pedley (30) mowed down the first 81 needed, which left Sam Kirkup (10no) to join-up the dots.
Luke Dennis (2-16) earned Plymstock a bonus point with the wickets of the Pedley brothers – Brenton then Max – in successive deliveries.
JASON Degg’s form for Plymouth 3rd XI continued with another 50-plus score in the rain-ruined game against Chagford 2nd XI.
Degg was on 62 not out against the Moorlanders when rain stopped play with Plymouth on 166 for three. Opening partner Charlie Watson had already been and gone for 71 by then.
In five trips to the middle this season, Degg has scored unbeaten two centuries, 81 and now 62 not out as well as 32. All those not-out scores have contributed to a staggering batting average of 293.
PLYMPTON 3rd XI beat their Plymstock counterparts by six wickets in a Sunday fixture to move up to second place in the G Division West.
Leon Steadman top scored for Plymstock with 30, just ahead of Seb Sharp (27), in Plymstock’s 40-over total of 158 for nine.
Sanketh Abilash (3-22) picked-off Steadman on his way to a three-wicket haul.
Openers Paul Hamilton (28) and Paul Burn (27) got the Plympton run-hunt up under way.
Keith Willcock (43) and Chris Dunstan (35) shared a stand of 52 for the fourth wicket that made the outcome a formality.
[O] BRIXHAM started against Kingsbridge at Boundary Park in the C Division West, but only got as far as the fifth over before rain stopped play. Kingsbridge were 20 without loss at the time.
