Degg stars for Plymouth 3rd XI | Almost 400 runs in six weeks | Already clear of last season’s total |

JASON Degg’s 2025 season could not have started any better; he already has two centuries and two 50s to his name – and his Plymouth 3rd XI side sits top of the G Division West.
Plymouth 3rd XI took a voluntary relegation to the basement division at the end of the 2022 season, but pushed for promotion from it for two years, ultimately winning the H Division West in 2024. They are now set for back-to-back promotions, largely thanks to Degg’s exploits.
Degg has scored 393 runs in five innings, and he’s only been dismissed once! The one time he didn’t raise the bat for 50, Plymouth succumbed to Plymstock 3rd XI. A century in the curtain-raiser against South Brent (108no) showed Degg meant business.
Fantastic
On his start to 2025, and his role in the side, Degg said: “It’s been a fantastic beginning of the season, and credit goes to Plymouth for trusting me to open in the 3rd XI, while fostering partnerships with the younger players coming through.
“Third-team cricket serves as a great learning platform for developing players, but it also offers opportunities for those less experienced.
“My role in the middle is to remind the younger players that there’s plenty of time to bat, while also working with them to set targets and build strategies.”
The Degg name may be familiar to those in Devon. Jason himself has played in the DCL for several years, and his son, James (Plympton, Torquay, Plymouth), progressed through the age groups, culminating in a stint in the Devon side across all three formats.
Degg Senior says the similarity in play styles causes some competition in the family, “There’s also a competitive family dynamic with my youngest, James, who plays for South Wiltshire in the Southern Premier League.
“He’s an opener too, and since his matches start a little earlier than mine, I often take a quick look at Play-Cricket for an extra piece of motivation before heading out to bat.”
Degg has other interests outside of scoring runs for Plymouth too, as he is now in his fifth season with the Devon over 50s. A tour to India resulted in his high score of 77.
“Playing for Devon Over 50s helps keep my cricket sharp during the week. It’s a brilliant opportunity to compete at a high level and absorb valuable insights from the wealth of experience around me.”
Alongside playing, Degg coaches for Devon and Plymouth. The Under 14 county age group side benefits from his wealth of knowledge, as does Plymouth College.
