Cornwood’s 4th XI dispatch Ivybridge counterparts | Fifties for Burrows senior and Cumberland | Burrows junior takes five wickets

CORNWOOD’S 4th XI made lightwork of Ivybridge 4th XI in a G Division West clash at Harberton.
The ‘Wood won the toss and chose to bat first, and despite double figure scores from Rocky Travers and Charles Knight (15), quickly slipped to 35 for three. Ivybridge captain Andy Statton took two of the three early wickets to fall; he finished with three for 44.
Max Clayton took the wicket of Anthony Chapman (16), which meant Duncan Cumberland joined Julian Burrows at the crease. At 54 for four, Ivybridge could have considered themselves on top.
Burrows and Cumberland set about rebuilding the innings; 29 and a half overs and 191 runs later, they would probably have deemed themselves successful, too.
The Ivybridge bowlers struggled to keep the run rate down, only Tom Fitzpatrick and captain Statton were able to stay below a run a ball.
Burrows brought up his half-century in the 24th over, Cumberland’s came in the 33rd, both players were intent on keeping the scoreboard ticking over, rather than a game of crash, bang wallop!
Statton was the man to remove Burrows with just three balls to go, he was gone for 84 from 86 balls. His knock included 12 boundaries, although it had been exactly 10 overs since his last.
Cumberland overtook Burrows with the last ball of the innings, a three meant he finished on 85no from 99. His knock involved 10 fours and one six, Ben Knight was Ivybridge’s unlucky recipient of the maximum. The Burrows and Cumberland partnership had led Cornwood to a formidable total of 249 for five.
After the turnaround, Cornwood’s bowling suffocated Ivybrigde. Not wanting to be outdone by Burrows senior, son Tommy Burrows claimed four top-order wickets for just 10 runs before age-related restrictions brought his spell to a halt.
Burrows junior was supported by Neel Shivane, who took two for six from his opening spell. The pair left Ivybridge reeling at 12 for six.
Andy Statton offered a small piece of resistance; he survived 37 balls for his 23 runs before Simon Garland (three for 15) removed him by taking a return catch.
Tommy Burrows needed only one ball of his next spell to finish the game off. He bowled Olly Harris with the first ball of the 21st over to win bowl Ivybridge out for 56 and claim his first DCL five-wicket haul.
Winning captain Marc Whaley showered praise for his side’s humility and all-round performances: “Pleasingly, once both batters had reached their half-centuries and were well set, they remained respectful of Ivybridge's bowlers.”
“Rather than looking to simply clear the ropes at every opportunity, they continued to play proper cricket and build the innings in the right way.”

Whaley’s player of the match was a toss-up between the two members of the Burrows family, but opted for junior over senior, “Tommy's 5-10 was much more impressive than dad’s 84.”
