The Devon Cricket Foundation is bitterly disappointed to learn of the ECB’s decision to only award first-class counties Tier 2 status under the new structure for women’s cricket.
Devon, along with all national counties, had been invited by the ECB to apply for Tier 2 status, with the Foundation producing an extensive bid that demonstrated the county’s passion and ambition for Devon Women.
Devon has a long and proud female cricketing tradition which, under the two-decades-long guidance of Warren Carr and Gavin Lane, regularly saw Devon Women competing at the top end of the Women's County Championship Division Two against several first-class counties. This has since been followed up this season with Devon Women finishing top of their 50-over Women’s County Championship group.
This proud history is underpinned by a solid and well-established county-wide hardball competition in the form of the Tolchards Devon Women's Cricket League, which boasts a phenomenal 15 teams across two divisions and has been running for over 20 years.
The Devon Cricket Foundation will continue to work hard to maintain this long-standing tradition and further elevate the women’s game across the county.
