DEVON’S first warm-up game ahead of the new cricket season has already fallen foul of the weather… more than a week before it was due to be played.

Devon were hoping to play a low-key, 50-over friendly at Sidmouth against the host club on Sunday, April 14.

Neil Gamble, the chief executive of Devon CCC, said weeks of bad weather meant there was no prospect of the Fortfield being fit for play.

“The groundsman and his assistants have not yet been able to get on the Fortfield square because of continuous rain and the outfield is sodden,” said Gamble.

“The match against Somerset 2nd XI at Exeter CC on the following Sunday (April 21), is also in some doubt.”

Devon’s first competitive match of the season is the Twenty20 double-header against Cornwall at Werrington on Sunday, April 28.

The opening home game of the season is a T20 double-date with Wiltshire at Exeter on Sunday, May 5.
