TIER TWO – EAST DIVISION ONE

BEN Slaviero and Alex Jopling bagged three wickets each to send Thoverton to an unlikely 13-run win over visiting Whimple in East Division One.

Thoverton were all out for 147 in the last of their 40 overs, but ended up defending a total of 116 after the target was lowered following a rain break.

Whimple looked on course for victory inside the 31 overs allowed at 78 for three in reply, then it all started to go wrong.

Ollie Whitton’s dismissal by Jack Stirling started a collapse that saw seven wickets fall for 24 runs scored. Four of them went going from 90 for five to 95 for nine.

Slaviero picked up two wickets in his second spell to finish with three for nine and Jopling (3-23) knocked over the stragglers.

Thorverton had been glad of a stand of 58 between George Greed (24) and Ben Sapiecha (43) for underpinning their innings.

Matt Richards (4-12) was easily the pick of the Whimple bowlers.

HEATHCOAT 2nd XI got away to a winning start in East Division One with a six-wicket victory at Shobrooke Park.

Former captain Jon James made the only score above 20 for Shobrooke in their 40-over total of 119 all out. Next best on 18 was current captain Ben Trenaman.

It all went wrong for Shobrooke during the period when they nosedived from 66 for three to 78 for seven. Finn Stoneman (3-19) was largely responsible for their downfall.

Jack Burnard (36no) and Will Thompson (21) got the score up to 40 for two then stand-in captain Dylan Penberthy (37) took Heathcoat most of the rest of the way.

Matt Hague, Heathcoat’s non-playing captain on this occasion, picked out two players to praise.

“Finn Stoneman bowled beautifully and new lad Jack Burnand anchored the innings to play a mature knock,” said Hague.

“It was great to get a game in and now we look forward to Thorverton at home this Saturday.”

Shobrooke are away to Whimple.
