EAST EAST ONE

OTTERY St Mary’s 24-run win over Sidmouth 2nd XI was not far off a complete performance in the eyes of skipper Alex Clements.

Jack Malden went in at 59 for four and made a top score of 57 in Ottery’s total of 142 for nine in a game slimmed down to 20 overs each.

Sidmouth were looking good at 94 for four in reply, but the loss of Louis Adey for 22 then Mike Lewis sparked a collapse that saw the last five wickets tumble for just 17 runs in a total of 118 all out.

Clements said what Malden and Joe Henkus (21) did with the bat was built on by the bowlers.

“Jack Malden batted very well for 57 off 37 balls and played with intent,” said Clements.

“He played smart cricket, hitting the bad balls and rotating the strike and got us off to a good start with Joe Henkus.

“When we bowled I was impressed with Matt Jeacock (2-12) and Henry Mutter (2-14). Both showed real maturity and control.

“The bowlers shared the spoils but bowled well as a unit. Will Harrison (2-25) was very much the leader of the attack and his experience showed.

“I thought we fielded brilliantly as a team and Joe Henkus took two fantastic catches in the field.”

Ottery continue their East East One programme this Saturday when they visit Upottery.

Sidmouth II are at home to Kilmington.

KILMINGTON’S game against Upottery was rained off too early it to count as a match and any points claimed have been voided.

Jack Larcombe (63) and Matt Button-Stephens (50) both made half-centuries in Upottery’s 35-over total of 182 for eight.

Kilmington were well placed on 117 for one in the 17th over – Josh Short unbeaten on 78 – when a downpour proved terminal to the game.

For run-rate to be used to decide a game the side batting second has to be out there for 20 overs and Upottery fell more than three overs short.

Kilmington face Sidmouth II at home this Saturday, which skipper Brett Garner describes as a ‘challenge’.

“You are never quite sure what sort of strength Sidmouth II are going to be but we look forward to the challenge,” said Garner.

As far as team news is concerned, Garner said: “I am hoping to have a couple back. No one is unavailable though we do have a doubt about Tommy [Gooding] who tweaked his hamstring fielding against Upottery and so did not risk aggravating it by having a bat on Saturday.

“Hopefully he’ll be OK for this coming Saturday.”

EAST TWO

TOR Ziegler-Evans picked up four wickets and there were three each for Matthew Wood and Callum Hogan in Exeter 2ndII’s 54-run win at Clyst St George.

Opener Mark Gribble top scored with 55 – he departed the stage with the score on 109 for three – and with Fin Hill (31) and Tor Ziegler-Evans (21) both chipping in a total of 202 for nine was posted in 40 overs.

Dan Kendall with five for 27 off eight overs was easily the cream of the Clyst bowlers.

Seamer Ziegler-Evans then ripped out four of Clyst’s top five as they subsided to 27 for four. Another collapse as 60 for four became 67 for seven hinted at an early finish.

Harry Attwater (39) and Bertie Creer (34no) delayed the interval during a stand of 62 for the eighth wicket. Hogan (3-40) picked off the stragglers missed by Ziegler-Evans and Wood (3-26).

Exeter host Exmouth this Saturday. St George go to Sandford.
