PLYMOUTH Civil Service & Roborough are starting to look untouchable at the top of West Four after cruising to a seven-wicket win over Ivybridge 2nd XI.

With two games to go in the group stages of this season’s competition Civil are more than six points clear of second-placed Kingsbridge. Only a serious loss of form now will cost the men from Manadon a place in the Tier Five semi-final next month.

Ivybridge were only allowed to make 126 for five in their 30 overs and were glad of an unbroken stand of 62 for the sixth wicket between Arthur Johnson (28) and James Griff (26) for getting that far.

Civil lost opener and captain Rob Gaylard cheaply, but Dan Winsor’s 59 not out saw them home for the further loss of Alan Smith (17) and Rob Walker (17).

The game between Kingsbridge and Cornwood 3rd XI was called off without a ball bowled.

HONITON were 27-run winners when they entertained Ottery St Mary II in a Tier Five East East Three match at Mountbatten Park.

With rain reducing the game to one of 34 overs a side, Honiton batted first and a superb 85-ball 93 from Dave Haysom – hit 15 boundaries, with 11 fours and four sixes – saw the Mountbatten Park men to 170-3.

The best of the supporting acts in terms of Honiton’s innings were knocks of 22, from Nathan Groves, who put on 99 for the first wicket with Haysom, and 19 from Michael Docherty.  Third change Max Moore claimed all three wickets and finished with figures of 3-27.  Ottery St Mary were then bowled out for 143 in 32 overs and one ball. Jonathan Triner (49) was the only batsman to make much of an impression. The wicket-taking honours were shared by Ian Kelly (4-45 from seven overs) and Rob Ingram (4-27 from 6.1 overs) and there were single wickets for Kieran Conway and Craig Mudd.

UPLYME & Lyme Regis continue to boss Tier Five East East Three after a fourth successive win, this one an eight-wicket victory at home to Axminster.

The visitors were invited to bat and they found it tough going as they laboured to a close of 143-3 after 40 overs.

Dan Murnane carried his bat throughout the innings to finish unbeaten on 48 and the ‘best of the rest’ were knocks of 28, from Brad Conway and an unbeaten 26 from Benjamin Webb.

Steve Batey (2-15) and Joe Elsworthy (1-25) claimed the wickets for the home side.

Batey then turned chief tormentor of the Axemen with the bat as he rifled a powerful 111 from just 48 deliveries, thumping eight sixes and a dozen fours.

Such was his dominance of the action that an eight-wicket win was sealed inside 18 overs!

Alfie Jaques (14) and Mark Batey (14) were the other home batsmen into double figures while Matt Chenery (2-54) was the successful Honiton bowler.
