Still going strong - Joel Murphy

CULLOMPTON have to spend another week propping up the A Division table after they went down by six wickets at Budleigh Salterton.

Something had to give in a meeting between two sides without a win and it always looked like Budleigh’s fortunes were on the up after they dismissed Cullompton for 110.

Will Oxland (2-15) picked-off Cully openers Brendon Parr and Jamal Anwar cheaply before James Shere (25) and Jason Parr (37) put on 60 for the third wicket.

Once Ed Doble broke the stand by dispatching Shere. Cullompton went into a steady decline from 78 for two to 83 for five then 94 for six to 110 all out.

Joel Murphy (5-15) did most of the damage, aided and abetted by Doble (3-25).

Other than a minor wobble when the Oxland brothers were third and fourth out on 68, the Budleigh chase was largely routine.

Tom Oxland made 26 and Matt Kimber was 26 not out when the winning post came into sight.

Lloyd Murrin, the Budleigh skipper said he hoped this win would kick start the season for the 1stXI.

“It was great to get our first win of the season and we are hoping it will be a catalyst going forward,” said Murrin.

“We put a top performance together for the duration which is what we had been lacking in previous games. We had set plans going into this game and executed them well.

“A fantastic effort by the boys in the field and the bowlers with Ed Doble being superb and Joel Murphy bowling fantastically well, as he has done for the last 75 years.”
