TOLCHARDS DCL D DIVISION EAST

IAN Sutton hit an undefeated century in Clyst Hydon’s crushing nine-wicket win over former D East leaders Whimple.

Whimple made 214 all out in the last of their 45 overs having got there by a scenic route. Opener Henry Gordon-Lennox made 69 of the first 96 in the book before he was second man out to Hydon skipper Chris Holmes (4-29).

The middle order did not really fire until Oli Whitton came in at 148 for six and hit 41 off 36 balls. David Drury chipped-in 23.

James Billington (2-32) and Will Thornton (2-35) took wickets in the second half of the innings.

Hydon lost opener Louis Marks (10) midway through the tenth over of their reply, which was as good as it got for Whimple.

Sutton (102no) and Graham Trude (79) put on 174 between them to win the game with more than three overs to spare. Sutton reached his ton with a boundary hit off Greg Benson that also won the match.

Winning skipper Holmes said the game could not have gone much better for his side.

“Winning the toss was a good start then we basically bowled well and fielded well to keep Whimple to 215,” said Holmes.

“The highlight has to be Sutton and Trude having a 175-run partnership and chasing down the runs with just the loss of one wicket.

“Sutton is batting superbly at the moment and having scored around 300 runs in the last three games.”

For the record it was Sutton’s second successive league ton – he took one of Chardstock in the previous game – and took his tally for the season to 421 in seven innings at an average around 70.

Defeat allowed Budleigh Salterton and Shobrooke Park to go past Whimple at the top of the table.

SAMPFORD Peverell & Tiverton’s patchy run of results in the D East continued with a five-run defeat at home to North Devon 2nd XI.

The team’s record in June is two wins and two losses and they finish the month just below halfway.

Richard Wild hammered out another message to the North Devon selectors with 95 off 65 balls in his side’s 30-over total of 205 for six.

Wild was the last man out in the rain-reduced innings having scored most of the runs in a stand of 79 with Josh King (21). Jay Rothery made 31 and Ed Yeo 24.

Joe Parkinson (2-42) was the only SP&T bowler to take more than one wicket.

No one could accuse SP&T of not going all out to win the game as Lee Hooper (25), Rob Venn (41) and Richard Pugsley (36) got them close.

Thirty-one to win from the final four overs was a tall order, but with Lewis Hough still there on 47 not out SP&T were still in the hunt. Five balls later Hough was dismissed for 54 and the game swung North Devon’s way just a little.

Ten to win from the final over, bowled by former Devon seamer Josh King, was just a few too many and SP&T ran out of time on 200 for six.

SHOBROOKE Park are up to second in the D East table thanks to a 103-run win over form side Barnstaple & Pilton.

Barnstaple & Pilton had won five on the trot going into the game, but were always second favourites after collapsing to 52 for six chasing 267 to win.

Chris Simpson (57) and Neil Branton (49) ran-up 113 for Shobrooke’s second wicket before Joe Hastie (4-70) split them up.

Andrew Codling (69) and Jermain Harding (72) added 126 for the fourth wicket in a total of 266 for five.

Codling (4-27) was largely responsible for B&P’s initial problems on the chase. Hastie (28) and captain Lee Cole (24) added some respectability to the scoreline, as did George Elnough (23).

Forty-one extras helped B&P reach 162 all out in the 42ndover.

DONOVAN Robinson and Marc Troman guided Budleigh Salterton to a crushing 10-wicket win over D East cellar dwellers Chardstock that took them to the top of the table.

Chardstock totalled 212 for six in their 45 over with substantial contributions from Alex Watson (49), Gary Larcombe (56), Robert Garth (35) and Stuart Parris (29).

Kamal Posapalli (3-53) was Budleigh’s main wicket taker. Adam Jones (1-28) bowled nine overs and gave little away.

Spinner Larcombe (9-2-17-0) kept the lid on Budleigh’s chasers while he was in action and Watson and Alex Dunesby went for less than five an over.

Robinson finished unbeaten on 103 and Troman was 80 not out when the winning post was passed.

The new one-two-three at the top of the table is Budleigh (134pts), Shobrooke Park (130) then former leaders Whimple (127).

FENITON moved nine points clear of the D East drop zone thanks to a comfortable 143-run win over fellow strugglers Clyst St George 2ndXI.

Jack Tucker’s impressive league form – four 50s so far and an average of 53.29 – continued with a top score of 57 in Feniton’s 41-over total of 304 for seven.

Openers Mark Salter (32) and Kevin Brandom (32) put on 65 then the runs kept coming from Tucker, Jon Pyle (22), Matt Kingdon (40), John Buckland (31no) and Matt Davies (24no).

Nathan Wells (3-21) was the lone Clyst bowler to operate at less than seven runs an over.

Clyst were going nowhere at 57 for four and only had bonus points and respectability to aim for from then on. Gareth Hall (32) and Ed Lister (29) helped reach a final tally of 161 all out.

Feniton shared the wickets around with three for Ben Peters (3-21) and two each for Pyle and Davies.

Chardstock (76pts) are bottom with St George (85), Clyst Hydon (90) and Sampford Peverell (92) then Feniton (94) directly above them.
