KILMINGTON won for the first time in four starts when they overcame Abbotskerswell by 97 runs.

The last time Kilmington tasted success in the A Division was when they defeated Seaton by three wickets in early June.

Kilmington opener Tom Gooding found some form after a run of indifferent scores with a 92 to underpin a total of 294 four eight.

By the time Tom Heath (3-58) removed Gooding the score was 201 for five and he had put on 81 with Billy Reed (41) and 69 with Josh Short (25).

Kilmington hadn’t finished yet as Oliver Reed flogged an unbeaten 52 off 27 balls – eight fours and a six – as 68 runs were added in the final five overs.

Pick of Abbots’ bowlers by a distance with three for 35 was new-ball operative Jay Hussain.

A rain break meant Abbots’ target came down to 263 to win in 35 overs, not the 41 Kilmington occupied.

Ed Smout-Cooper (41) and Hussain (28) got the chase started, but a slump from 82 for two t0 102 for five proved costly.

James Tyler (21), Sam Carpenter (28) and skipper Nick Watkin (30) all chipped in before Abbots were bowled out early for 165.

Wickets were spread around the Kilmington attack with two each for Oliver Reed, Short and Matt Reed and three for Oscar Oborn-Corby (3-28), who reappeared and picked up two wickets.

While Kilmington remain in the bottom two for another week at least, Abbots have dropped within three points of the relegation places.

Watkin said availability issues posed problems for the team, especially in the bowling department.

“Jay Hussain bowled brilliantly, but we struggled other than that with the ball, partly due to us missing all of our spinners who all were unavailable,” said Watkin.

“Batting-wise, that many runs in the overs we had was a huge ask.

“We were never really in the game and I thought Kilmington fully deserved to win.

“Hopefully we will get some players back ready to go again for a big one against Barton this weekend.”
