PLYMSTOCK rediscovered their winning habits when they won by eight wickets at home to Paignton 2nd XI.

Skipper James Nicholls was looking for a reaction after the loss at Stoke Gabriel seven days earlier and certainly got it from his table-topping side.

Paignton were limited to 172 for six in their 45 overs, which Plymstock knocked off with more than 14 overs to spare.

Paignton’s batting was solid rather than spectacular with Brenton Pedley (28), Rio Koyikarra (20) and Steve George (26no) all contributing. Forty-one extras – 25 of them wides – chivvied the total along.

“After a decent start by Paignton our spinners were absolutely superb,” said Nicholls.

“Tom Mitch (2-25) and Devon under-14 skipper Matty Whalley (0-24) bowled with control and skill and made my life easy.

“Billy Gibson (2-30) has worked really hard on his bowling angles and change ups and finished the innings strongly for us.”

Plymstock were 60 for two when Hal Kerton went out to join Josh Hocken and did not lose another wicket on the way to winning the game.

Hocken led the way with 94 not out and Kerton was unbeaten on 45 when the winning runs were scored.

“We knew when we batted we had a great chance if we got through Archie Farkins and Sean Kirk – and that proved the case,” said Nicholls.

“Josh Hocken was class and Hal (Kerton) made things look as routine, as he always does.

“Chasing 171 just two down with time to spare is always very pleasing.”

Victory keeps Plymstock comfortably clear at the top of the table by 40 points from Cornwood.

In a division with only one promotion place, Plymstock are probably only two more wins away from being sure of going up.

Nicholls’ target has always been promotion back to the B Division at the first attempt. But he is clear it is not job done yet.

“Five games left and we have to make sure we keep our standards as high as possible as we have won absolutely nothing yet,” said Nicholls.
