BOVEY Tracey snapped out of their losing run with an eight-wicket demolition job on form side Heathcoat.

Heathcoat had won four on the bounce going into Saturday’s meeting at Ashburton Road and were slight favourites.

Heathcoat lost opener and captain Brad Barnes in the first over, Pete Randerson in the second and were 30 for three when Will Thompson was out in the eighth.

Dylan Penberthy stuck it out for more than an hour to make 23, but wickets were falling regularly to Malcolm Lake (2-20) and Hugo Whitlock (2-14).

Former captain Sam Smith (19) and last man Jack Menheneott (12no) had the only double-figure scores apart from Penberthy as Heathcoat slumped to 103 all out.

New Devon spinner Toby Codd showed what the county selectors have spotted in him by taking four for 26 to dismiss the bottom half of the Heathcoat batting.

Heathcoat got a breakthrough in the third over when dangerman Lake  - the former captain of Zimbabwe U19s – was run out for 10.

Pete Bradley took charge of the run chase with 61 not out off 74 balls and was still there at the end with Matt Golding.

Heathcoat skipper Barnes tried eight bowlers in an effort to find breakthroughs, but with limited success.

“It was a good, all-round performance,” said Bovey skipper Hickinbottom.

“We picked up regular wickets, which we needed as Heathcoat have scored some big runs this season.

“We held all our catches, including a one-hander low down at slip by Lake, and all the bowlers just hit their areas to give us a nice target to chase.

“Pete led from the front with the bat with a nice return to form to pick us up some key points at the halfway stage.”

Heathcoat skipper Barnes was prepared to take the result on the chin.

“It was a really bad day at the office, “ said Barnes.

“I will take the blame as I won the toss and batted. We have had a bad record there batting first.

“I suppose hindsight is a wonderful thing.”
