PLYMOUTH batsman Andy Birkett marked his first serious game for three years with a rapid 76 for the 2nd XI in a dash for runs against Hatherleigh.
The former Cornwall batsman, Plymouth Albion rugby player, and BBC TV journalist, whacked 12 fours and two sixes from 66 balls towards the city side's total of 145 for five in the C West fixture.
Birkett, now eligible for over-50s’ cricket if he chooses, shared two stands of 40 with Dinitha Onel (15) then Evan Burke (17) before rain stopped play in the 23rd over.
Greg Solkin (2-47) was the only Hatherleigh bowler to take more than one wicket.
Paignton 2nd XI had reduced Kingsbridge to 21 for two when their C West meeting at Queen’s Park was called off.
Freddie Ford departed at the start of the third over – and James Westlake followed with one ball left in the fourth. The covers went on before the fifth over commenced.
Andy Singh and Jacob Lander had a wicket each for Paignton, who are away to Cornwood this Saturday.
Only two overs were bowled at Two Mile Oak before derby tussle between Abbotskerswell and Ipplepen met a soggy end.
Pens’ opener Marcus Gadie was 10 not out in his side’s total of 16 without loss.
South Devon were unable to get on the field against Cornwood 2nd XI due to lunchtime rain at Marsh Lane.
South Devon make the short trip to Chudleigh this Saturday afternoon. The Kate Brook side have not had any match time yet as they were rained-off at Brixham.
