YELVERTON produced a mini-shock in the D Division West when they defeated Barton 2nd XI by six wickets.
Barton arrived at Langton Park third in the table and fresh from knocking Chagford off top spot. Yelverton were in the bottom two.
Barton are still third in the table, but Yelverton have lifted themselves out of the drop spots, where Babbacombe have taken over their old spot.
Barton were all out for 11 in the 34th over. Take out scores from Arunkrishna Radhakrishnan (31) and Oliver Shelton (32) and there was not a lot from the rest.
Hadleigh Scott-Kirk (3-14) and Alistair Horler (3-25) were Yelverton’s leading wicket takers. Lee Foskett (2-38) also got involved.
Chasing low targets can be a fraught affair at times – and nine overs from Sree Sankaranaryanan (2-14) reminded Yelverton there was a job to be done.
Runs from David Ackford (25), Ben Grove (22) and Scott-Kirk (39) ensued there were no slip-ups.
MALIK Wasim hit an unbeaten century to steer Plymouth CS&R to a seven-wicket win over relegation worriers Babbacombe.
Babbacombe had set Civil 211 to win, which they duly did with more than 12 of their 45 overs unused.
Rob Redding (53) and Paul Sutherland (41) got Babbacombe up and running. Dan Western (33) chipped-in towards a total of 210 for eight.
Of the eight bowlers Civil skipper Jonny Keiller turned to, none were more successful than Muhammad Ali (4-44) or James Higgins (3-19). Al Stewart (9-0-17-0) was easily the meanest.
Wasim’s undefeated 107 made the chase a cake-walk. Ritesh Dubey helped himself to 62 for Civil, who moved up into the top five.
TORQUAY & Kingskerswell 2nd XI dented Plymouth 2nd XI’s promotion aspirations when they defeated them by 58 runs on the Recreation Ground.
No batter got as far as 30 for Torquay & Kingskerswell in their all-out total of 186 all out. A matching pair of 29s for Ryan Hanauer and Fiaz Ebrahim were the best they could muster.
Steve Skews (3-41) and Aziz Rahmanzai (2-27) took the bowling pats on the back for Plymouth.
Plymouth’s run hunt wandered from 19 for three to 83 for six and finished on 128 – 30 of which were extras! Best from the bat was the 23 skipper James Toms made against one of his former clubs.
Left-arm spinner Towkir Chowdhury (4-10 off 9) was T&K’s most demanding bowler.
KENN defeated Ivybridge 2nd XI by two wickets in a low-scoring affair at Fillham Park.
The Bridge were all out for 124 with Simon Kidd (26) booking the best of a sorry set of scores. No one else got past 18.
Best of the bowling came from Alfie Mason (2-25) and Pete Chislett (3-26). Three run-outs did not help Ivybridge’s cause.
Ben Chaloner, recalled to the 1st XI after making a double-ton in the second team last time out, got Kenn to 69 for three virtually on his own. He made 54.
The rest of the chase was a tense business with no partnership reaching 30. Four wickets fell getting from 98 to 112 as the suspense increased. Adrian Pullin (3-29) and Toby Borrow (2-26) kept Kenn’s batters on their toes.
Bits and pieces got Kenn home in the hand. Alfie Mason (15) and James Gosling (16) played parts.
CHAGFORD defeated Hatherleigh 2nd XI by one wicket in an absorbing top-of-the-table clash in the D Division West.
Chagford were asked to improve on Hatherleigh’s total of 179 for nine and got there with last pair Chris Jelley and Martin Herrington out in the middle.
Defeat cost Hatherleigh the divisional leadership, which they had pinched off Chagford seven days earlier despite losing to Ivybridge. Chagford lost more heavily to Barton 2nd XI.
Not for the first time this season Hatherleigh’s top scorer was skipper Danny Forrester, who went in at 82 for six and went on to make 35. Niall Leahy made 28 at the top of the order and Jack Probert hung around to make 32.
Richard Hopwood, the Chagford all-rounder who was absent when they lost to Barton, topped the bowling stats with four for 43.
Hopwood’s importance to Chagford was emphasised by a top score of 71 during the run chase. He opened and got as far as 100 for four.
Jelley, a former Hatherleigh player, went in at 114 for five and nursed the bottom half of the order over the line. The key partnership was one of 37 for the ninth wicket between Jelley (38no) and Jack Brijnath (19) that levelled the scores.
Luke Westacott (4-26) played havoc with Chagford’s middle order. And there were two wickets for Cameron Rowlands.
