D WEST ROUND-UP – WEEK TWO

FARZAD Safi was the man of the moment for Ivybridge 2nd XI in an unlikely two-wicket win at Abbotskerswell in the D Division West.

Chasing what looked like a gettable 157 to win in a 45-over game, the Bridge had stumbled from 12 for one to 19 for six when Safi went in at number eight. Three wickets or George Brotherwood (3-23) and two more for Cameron Gold did most of the damage.

It looked like game-up until Safi found a willing running mate in Alfie Lewis-Frost during a stand of 92 for the seventh wicket that turned the game on its head.

Gold (3-26) came back for second spell and accounted for Lewis-Frost, which left Safi to manage the tail.

Adrian Pullin was the only other wicket to fall before Safi won it with a boundary off the bowling of Jamie Lee to finish on a career-best 95 not out.

Abbots’ leading scorer had been Erik Gregersen (54). He was aided and abetted by Nick Guest (21) and Will Small (23).

Pullin (3-30) and Safi (2-22) took the bowling applause for Ivybridge.

YELVERTON came up a long way short on the chase away to Chagford, where 230 to win proved too many.

Matt Smale (4-30) and Seb Clewer (3-29) stared with the ball as Yelverton bowled out Chagford for 229 in the last over.

Lucas Pedrochi, over from Australia to play for Chagford, top scored with 68 and Ted Gossett made 47. Chris Jelley weighed in with 30.

Skipper David Ackford (44) was the only one of Yelverton’s top six to get past eight! By the time Smale (26) and Josh Stevenson (20no) put bat to ball the game had got away.

Jelley and Neil Rowlands claimed three wickets each, and Gossett two more, as Yelverton were bundled out for 158.

DAVE Manning biffed the bowling for 80 to help Tavistock 2nd XI to a five-wicket win over Plymouth CS&R.

Al Stewart (2-36) made life difficult for Tavistock at first by sending back openers Ryan Burke and Ben Evans.

By the time Manning (80) and Harry Geering (67) had been separated by Saqib Hasan (2-41), Tavistock were in sight of their 205-run target.

Civil had Nuruz Zamal (62no) to thank for getting them going after a slow start. Malik Wasim (24), Jamie King (39) and Hasan (25), all got set without going further.

Marc Lewis with four for 52 was Tavistock’s most successful bowler. Spinner Shaun Daymond and seamer David Milligan both cost fewer than four runs an over.

PLYMSTOCK 2nd XI survived a lower-order batting collapse to beat Ipplepen 2nd XI by one wicket.

Half-century-plus scores from veteran opener Jeff Heath (86) and Noah Sutton (55) helped the Pens make 239 for seven. Heath and Sutton put on 101 for the fourth wicket.

Ben Whalley’s bowling return of three for 44 stood out in the Plymstock figures.

Opener Dave Ling appeared to have put Plymstock on course to win it with a knock of 102 that took Plymstock to 230 for five. Jordan Spencer (26) and not-outer Dean Jeffrey were the supporting acts. Wiping off the final eight needed for victory proved a problem.

Jack Edworthy, back for a second spell, caused panic in the Plymstock ranks with four wickets in eight balls. Jeffrey (29) was one of them.

Tail-ender Ian Whalley barely had time to change out of his shorts and back into his whites before he went in as last man. He wasn’t needed though as Josh Williams took care of business by hitting Marcus Green for four.
