The Tolchards Devon Women’s Cricket League title race takes centre stage this weekend with a mouth-watering top-of-the-table clash at the County Ground, while there is just as much at stake at the other end of Division One.
Leaders Exeter head into the latest round of fixtures on 100 points, five clear of North Devon (95), with Paignton (87) and reigning champions Plymouth (83) still firmly in the hunt for the title. North Devon’s challenge has been significantly hampered by a nine-point deduction for administrative errors during the season, meaning the title race could look very different without those penalties. At the bottom, Exmouth (30) and Cornwood (28) continue their battle to avoid relegation, making every point crucial as the season enters its closing stages.
Exeter vs North Devon
The headline fixture sees second-placed North Devon travel to the County Ground to face leaders Exeter in a match that could go a long way towards deciding who finishes top of Division One on September 6.
Both teams arrive in excellent form after recording back-to-back victories and will be full of confidence ahead of what promises to be one of the games of the season.
North Devon’s hopes could once again rest with Regina Lili, who returns to the venue where she struck a superb century for Devon just seven days ago. Another big contribution from the in-form batter would give the visitors every chance of leapfrogging Exeter at the summit.
Exeter, meanwhile, have responded impressively to their defeat against Paignton by recording comfortable victories over Exmouth and Cornwood to regain momentum.
Captain Elle Goldsworthy is relishing the challenge.
“Hopefully we’ll be very close to full strength. We’re awaiting a late fitness test on Katie Donovan and hopefully she’ll be able to take a full part in the game. It’s obviously a top-of-the-table clash and we’re looking forward to it. Hopefully we can take 20 points from this game and put a bit of breathing space between ourselves and the other sides.”
With first place at stake, all the ingredients are in place for a fascinating encounter between two evenly matched sides.
North Devon did not provide any team news or pre-match comments for this week’s preview.
Paignton vs Exmouth
Elsewhere, Paignton welcome Exmouth looking to bounce back from their surprise defeat to an eight-player Plymouth side and keep the pressure on the league’s top two.
Despite that setback, Paignton remain firmly in the title picture and know victory would ensure they remain within striking distance of Exeter and North Devon.
Hollie Perkin will miss the fixture, with Katie Harman taking charge.
“Unfortunately I’m not around this weekend, so Katie Harman will take charge. She’ll be keen to maintain her 100% record as captain. We’ve got a pretty strong side out, with most of the usuals available, and we’re looking forward to welcoming Jojo Bayliss back from her travels and new signing Bella Taylor. We’ve now got a good group of experienced players to complement some of our younger players, who have been improving in leaps and bounds throughout the season. Hopefully we can pick up 20 points here before our very, very long away trip to North Devon in a couple of weeks.”
Exmouth, meanwhile, travel knowing every point could prove vital in their fight to avoid relegation.
Jasmyne Watson is looking forward to the challenge.
“Looking forward to playing Paignton. We know quite a few of their players quite well from the county setup. We’re also looking forward to welcoming back Laila Escott to the side. She’s missed the first half of the season through injury but will be keen to make up for lost time.”
With Paignton chasing the title and Exmouth battling for survival, both sides have plenty to play for.
Plymouth vs Cornwood
The final fixture of the weekend sees Cornwood make the short trip into the city for a West Devon derby against Plymouth.
The previous meeting between the two clubs was washed out, but with a favourable weather forecast both teams will be hoping to settle matters on the field this time around.
Plymouth sit fourth on 83 points, just four behind Paignton, and know another victory would keep them firmly in contention in one of the closest Division One title races for several seasons.
Missy Banks says Plymouth are looking forward to having a near full-strength squad available for the run-in.
“I don’t want to give too much away! We’re delighted to welcome Claire Varcoe-Hughes back into league action, which everyone is really pleased about. With exams now finished, we’re hoping to be able to put out our strongest XI for the remainder of the season. It’s nice to have league cricket back after the break, and we’ll be looking to be really competitive over our final four games. It’s also great to see so many teams still in contention for the title, which is a good reflection of where women’s cricket is in Devon at the moment.”
Gemma Lancaster of Cornwood is optimistic despite the challenge ahead.
“We’ve got a really strong team spirit at the moment and a very young side who have come so far in such a short period of time this season. We continue to bring through our up-and-coming Under-15 and Under-16 players alongside some experienced heads, and that’s been really pleasing to see. Plymouth are one of the stronger sides in the league and have some strong characters within their team, so we’re looking forward to a hard-fought contest. We aim to enjoy our cricket and hopefully pick up a few wins along the way. I’ve packed my umbrella just in case!”
Cornwood, meanwhile, know they cannot afford many more slip-ups. Sitting just two points behind Exmouth at the foot of the table, victory in the derby could lift them off the bottom and breathe fresh life into their survival bid.
With the title race and relegation battle both delicately poised, Sunday’s three Division One fixtures promise to play a significant part in shaping the remainder of the 2026 season.
