There was plenty of drama across the Tolchards Devon Women’s League this weekend, with a top-of-the-table clash in Division One, dominant batting displays, and several closely fought finishes across the divisions. Exeter strengthened their grip at the top of Division One after edging North Devon in a high-scoring encounter, while Bovey Tracey continued their unbeaten run in Division Three. Elsewhere, Holsworthy celebrated a first league win of the season, and the T20 competitions delivered more entertaining action, including a thrilling two-run finish in the T20 Plate.
Here's how the weekend unfolded across the county.
Division One
Exeter vs North Devon
It was a top-of-the-table clash as Exeter welcomed North Devon on Sunday. After winning the toss, Exeter batted first and made the perfect start, with openers Jessica Breban (61) and Georgia Read sharing a superb 151-run partnership. Read continued her outstanding innings to finish unbeaten on 153 from 119 balls, while contributions from Elle Golsworthy (29) and Imogen Daldorph (10) helped Exeter post an imposing 296 from their allotted overs despite North Devon using nine different bowlers.
North Devon mounted a spirited reply, with Lauren Bowden making 55 before Regina Lilii anchored the chase with a magnificent unbeaten 122. Kate Williams added 58 and Issie Ollis chipped in with 17, but the visitors ultimately fell just 16 runs short of the target. Briella Humphreys Crouch (3/48) and Imogen Daldorph (2/35) led Exeter's bowling attack as the hosts secured a crucial victory to move 13 points clear at the top of the Division One table.
Paignton vs Exmouth
Paignton welcomed Exmouth and, after winning the toss, elected to field first. The visitors made a positive start through Sasha Gerrick (39) and Lucy Humphreys (48), who shared a solid opening partnership before Gerrick was dismissed by Ellie Bishop. Bishop then struck again with the very next delivery to remove Laila Escott and finished an excellent spell with three wickets. Jasmyne Watson (38) and Holly Evans (30) rebuilt the innings with a valuable partnership, but both eventually fell as Exmouth closed on 189/7 from their allotted overs.
Paignton's reply suffered an early setback with the loss of Sophie Kirkup (4), but the hosts quickly recovered through a series of strong batting performances. Jemima Vereker led the chase with an excellent 75, while Ellie Bishop (35*), Ella Gill (21) and Arabella Taylor (21) all made important contributions. Paignton reached their target in the 24th over to secure a convincing victory and move up to second place in the Division One table.
Plymouth vs Cornwood
Cornwood travelled to Plymouth still searching for their first Division One victory of the season. After winning the toss, Plymouth elected to bat first and piled on an imposing 336 from their allotted overs. Claire Varcoe led the way with a superb unbeaten 106, while Darcey Boote added 53 and Lucy Hulbert finished unbeaten on 54 as the home side's batters dominated throughout the innings.
Facing a daunting target, Cornwood found it difficult to build any momentum against a disciplined Plymouth bowling attack. Imogen Garland battled hard for an unbeaten 42, but with wickets falling regularly around her, the visitors were unable to mount a sustained challenge. Sophie Brandom was the standout bowler with four wickets, while Melissa Banks and Bella Greenwood claimed two apiece as Plymouth bowled Cornwood out for 117 to secure a comprehensive victory.
Division Two
Taunton Deane vs Plympton
Taunton Deane welcomed Plympton for their latest Division Two fixture, with the hosts winning the toss and electing to bat first. Despite a well-made 51 from Pippa Stephens, Taunton Deane struggled to build partnerships as wickets fell regularly throughout the innings. Steph Hutchins produced a superb spell with the ball, returning outstanding figures of 7-2-7-5 to help dismiss the hosts for just 76.
Plympton's chase began with two early setbacks as Immy Burt (0) and Maddie Turner (0) were both dismissed by Amelie Keal. However, Thailand international Nannapat Khoncharoenkai quickly took control of the innings, smashing an unbeaten 55 from just 19 deliveries. Supported by Steph Hutchins (14*), Plympton comfortably reached their target in just eight overs to secure an emphatic victory.
Division Three
Bovey Tracey vs Bradninch & Kentisbeare
Bovey Tracey travelled to Kensham Park to face Bradninch & Kentisbeare, looking to maintain their perfect Division Three record. After winning the toss, the visitors elected to bat first and posted an impressive 215/2 from their 30 overs. Amelie Webber anchored the innings with an unbeaten 86, while Olive McCauley added 53. Captain Libby Hooper looked set for a half-century before she was bowled by Colette Bamber for 41.
Bradninch & Kentisbeare made a positive start to the chase, with openers Fi Morgan (23) and Emma Farley (19) sharing a 55-run partnership before both were dismissed. Yvonne Jackson held the innings together with a determined unbeaten 44 from 67 balls, while Meg Acton (36) and Jess Phillips (15*) also made useful contributions. However, the hosts were unable to find the acceleration needed in the closing overs, finishing 38 runs short. The victory marks Bovey Tracey's seventh win from seven league matches, strengthening their position at the top of the Division Three table.
Chagford vs Ottery St Mary
Chagford welcomed Ottery St Mary for their latest Division Three fixture, with the hosts winning the toss and electing to bat first. Ottery's bowlers dominated throughout the innings, dismissing Chagford for just 89 in the 24th over. Lily Finlay top-scored with 29, but no other batter reached double figures as Lily Harlond starred with the ball, claiming four wickets. Alice Gregory and Olivia Morgan also impressed, taking two wickets apiece.
Despite the modest target, Ottery's chase was far from straightforward. Early wickets for captain Abbie Sullivan (13) and Lily Harlond (28) gave Chagford hope, while Lily Finlay produced an outstanding spell to claim four wickets and keep the pressure on. However, contributions from Darcey Jones (10), Ava Fripp (5) and 31 extras proved enough to see Ottery over the line in the 18th over and secure an important victory.
Exmouth 2nds vs Holsworthy
The final game in Division Three saw Exmouth host Holsworthy. After back-to-back wins, Exmouth were in good form heading into their game against a Holsworthy side who were still looking to secure their first win of the season. The visitors won the toss, electing to field, which proved to be an excellent decision by the captain, F Godfrey, with Exmouth being bowled out for 70 after 23.1 overs thanks to the excellent all-round bowling attack, led by their captain, who finished 3/24 along with wickets for E Barnes (2/15), J Gardner (2/14) and L Godfrey (2/8).
Again, F Godfrey led the way with the bat (23*) along with E Barnes (19*) as Holsworthy chased down the total of 70 in 19.1 overs, earning their first league win of the season, winning by 8 wickets.
T20 8 A Side Group A
Exmouth 3rds vs Exmouths 4ths
It was an all-Exmouth affair as Exmouth 3rd XI took on Exmouth 4th XI in the T20 Eight-a-Side competition. The 3rd XI won the toss and elected to field first, but the 4th XI produced an impressive batting display. H Wood starred with a blistering unbeaten 70 from just 46 balls, while K Riley added an unbeaten 37 and S Strode contributed 16 not out as the 4th XI posted an excellent 177 from their 20 overs.
In reply, the 3rd XI struggled to keep pace with the required run rate against a disciplined bowling attack. L Bradbury provided the standout performance with an unbeaten half-century (54*), and support from A Fulner (28*), the chase never gathered momentum. The 3rd XI eventually finished 40 runs short, handing the 4th XI an impressive victory.
T20 Plate Group C
Cullompton vs Bradninch & Kentisbeare
In the T20 Plate, Cullompton welcomed Bradninch & Kentisbeare for the latest Group C fixture. After winning the toss, the hosts elected to field first, but Bradninch & Kentisbeare posted a competitive 124 from their 20 overs. Emma Farley anchored the innings with an unbeaten 42, while Fi Moran added 27 and Meg Acton contributed 17 to give the visitors a solid total to defend.
Cullompton's reply got off to the worst possible start as they slipped to 18/5, leaving themselves with a mountain to climb. However, M. Rendall (34), J. Ingersent (17) and G. Kaur (15) mounted a fightback to bring the hosts within touching distance of victory. Despite their efforts, Cullompton were eventually bowled out for 122, falling agonisingly short by just two runs in a thrilling finish.
