PLYMOUTH have added firepower with bat and ball for the season ahead in the Tolchards DCL Premier Division, which starts at home to Sandford tomorrow.
Dan Goodey, a bowler who is more than useful with a bat in his hand, is back at Mount Wise after four full seasons in the Southern Premier League with Bashley.
Goodey was a Devon regular in white-ball cricket before he moved to Hampshire, and had featured in the three-day side as well.
Totally new to Mount Wise is Kagiso ‘Jonty’ Rapulana, a batting all-rounder who plays all three formats of the game in South Africa for KZN-Inland.
The name will ring a few bells with Devon cricket watchers as Rapulana had a busy season for Premier rivals Hatherleigh in 2022. He scored more than 700 league runs at an average approaching 60 – 146 of them taken off Plymouth at Mount Wise.
A knock of 74 in the ECB Cup defeat at Truro on Sunday suggests Rapulana has arrived in form.
Rapulana also bowls off-spin and took 24 for Hatherleigh in 2022. He played for Cumbrian Premier side Dalton in 2024.
Gone from last season are bowling all-rounder Ethan Guest, currently believed to be in Australia, and Devon white-baller Matt Whalley. He has switched to Callington in the Cornwall Premier League.
Sam Stein stepped down as skipper at the end of last season after consolidating Plymouth’s status as a Premier club following promotion.
Teddy Haffenden, a Plymouth youth graduate, is the new man with his hand on the tiller.
“Our aim for the season is to play positive cricket, push on some of our younger cricketers and enjoy our time on the field,” said Haffenden. “Results will take care of themselves.”
Sandford, where Adam Small has replaced Jackson Thompson as captain, are still waiting on a visa for their as-yet un-announced overseas player.
"A frustrating delay but will hopefully be with us for the following week," said Small.
One new face who did not reequire a visa is Harry Southgate, who has switfched from Heathcoat following their drop into the A DIvision.
Southgate is set to make his debut against Cornwood, alongside home-grown all-rounder Jonny Handley,
Ben Chaloner, a prolific run-maker in lower-division cricket with Kenn, has joined looking for a step-up.
