BARTON can look back at the A Division season that just ended with some jusification as a step in the right direction.

Relegation from the A Division in 2025 was a setback for Barton, who had only just returned to it after a two-season absence. Operating without an overseas player until mid-June was a definite handicap.

Barton had Pakistani Muhammad Basit in situ for every game they started in 2026 and his impact was noticeable. Basit scored 724 league runs and claimed 23 wickets with his off-spin.

With consistency at one end for lengthy periods in most matches – even Basit got out cheaply from time to time – Barton could play with more freedom.

As the season unfolded results got better and better, taking Barton from third from bottom at half way to a permanent spot in the top four.

There was even talk around the boundary of a late promotion push, although supporters were keener than the team management, who felt it was a year to soon.

Steve Lewis, who started the season as skipper then moved sideways to the club captain role, said things are definitely looking up at Cricketfield Road, especially on the emerging player front.

“At the half way point we were in a bad place, but everyone rallied to have an incredible second half,” said Lewis.

“We are proud of the youngsters that have been part of this journey. Thomas Cox, Riley Calland and Dev Sinha have been stand-out in that category. 

“Now we have solid foundations to build on and make next season successful. And there are more youngsters on the fringe who we will back through the winter to add to the first-team dynamic next season.”
