PLYMSTOCK have been forced to move their home game against Braunton tomorrow (August 2) to Blundell’s School, Tiverton while it is out of bounds due to a traveller invasion.
Travellers forced their way on to the Dean Cross cricket ground on Monday night and show no signs of leaving voluntarily.
An order to quit was issued on Wednesday, but the eviction process is still going through the courts. With no suitable venue nearby to switch to, Plymstock have hired Big Field at Blundell’s School to the game on.
James Nicholls, the Plymstock player and official dealing with the illegal encampment, said the local community was quick to rally round and help out
“Thanks to the cricket community for offers of training facilities, and also a huge thanks to the local community for words of support and generous donations via our justgiving page towards repairs,” said Nicholls.
“Wembury CC have helped by donating bar profits from a midweek game against our friendly XI through the justgiving portal
“The illegal encampment of travellers has led to extensive damage to both the playing facilities and essential infrastructure.
“Our net complex has been broken into and there is vehicle damage to the outfield and the pitch.
“When the travellers leave the hard work will start to restore the facilities and support the necessary recovery efforts.
""Countess people have donated already to our repair fund, friends of the club we did not know we had! To all of them, a heartfelt thank-you."
Nicholls said if friends of the club can help with the restorations tasks, that would be a huge help.
“There will be working parties a plenty to clear up on departure – and all hands would be appreciated,” he said.
