FRIENDS, family and old team-mates of former cricketer, footballer and golfer will be paying their fond farewells to Graham Weeks at his funeral next week.
Weeks, who played football for Exeter City, cricket for Exeter St Thomas and Alphington and golf at Downes (Crediton) died unexpectedly of a suspected heart attack. He was 68.
The Exeter and Devon Crematorium is expected to be packed for Graham’s funeral service, which takes place on Friday, July 10 at 12.30pm.
Weeks attended Hele’s School in Exeter before joining Exeter City aged 16 as an apprentice professional. Brothers Mike and Jeff were also keen footballers, but didn’t graduate to the professional game.
When Exeter City won promotion from the old Fourth Division in 1976, midfielder Graham was a member of the team. He played 60 times in the first team before leaving for a brief stint with Bournemouth.
Non-league football with then Southern League side Bideford Town came next, which was the start of a new career as a part-timer. Stints at Exmouth Town (twice), Dawlish Town and Crediton United followed, before a cricket injury took him into management.
Graham was assistant manager of Exmouth Town in the 1980s when, the Southern Road side won two Western League titles and reached the last four of the FA Vase. He was manager in the 1990s.
His new ‘day job’ was as a technician with British Telecom – later BT – for whom he worked as a technician for until his retirement.
Graham switched from Exeter St Thomas CC to Alphington where he played as a wicketkeeper-batsman, administrated and also umpired. He was chairman from 2001-2008 before passing the post to Mike Knight. Golf at Downes became a pastime in later life.
The Weeks name lives on at what is now Alphington & Countess Wear CC where Graham’s son Tom is the second team captain.
Graham Weeks is survived by wife Cathy – the couple were married for 47 years – their children Tom and Jess and three grandchildren. His funeral will be followed by a reception back at the Alphington Sports Club.
The family have asked for donations in Graham’s memory to be made to the Devon Cricket Foundation in aid of youth cricket. Send to LeRoy Funerals, 10 Alphington Road, Exeter EX2 8HH or https://funeral-notices.co.uk/notice/weeks/5306500
