Kazi Szymanski bowling for Devon in 2021

FORMER Glamorgan quick bowler Kazi Szymanski is back in Devon’s side for Sunday’s T20 warm-up against the Gloucestershire Academy at Exeter, writes Conrad Sutcliffe.

Szymanski played a handful of times for Devon last season after Wales MC agreed to release him. He had not featured for them since 2019.

Elliot Staddon – Devon captain against Glocs AcademyPaceman Szymanski made an instant impact in three-day cricket with 13 wickets in his first two games and attracted interest from Worcestershire on the strength of it.

Devon are hoping to see more of Szymanski in all three forms of the game this season and want to warm him up for the NCCA T20 Cup opener against Cornwall at Werrington at the end of the month.

With captain Jamie Stephens (knee) missing due to an injury, and professional Calum Haggett not available, Devon have asked Cornwood captain Elliot Staddon to captain the side.

Staddon, a newcomer to the Devon set-up, impressed with the bat with a quickfire 40 in Devon’s win over the University of Exeter at Sidmouth last Sunday.

There are game-time opportunities for Exeter’s Sam Read, Exmouth’s James Horler, Sidmouth’s new signing Jamie Baird, Plymouth’s James Degg and former Warwickshire Academy scholar Fahad Sabir in Devon’s 13-man squad.

Baird, a student at the University of Exeter, has been through the Somerset youth system and has been dual registered with Devon since 2019.

Left-armer Sabir was registered by Devon last season and featured mainly in white-ball cricket as an economical bowler.
