HEATHCOAT seam bowler Jamie Drew has unsurprisingly kept his place in the Devon squad to face Wiltshire at Sandford after a record-breaking debut against Herefordshire.

Drew got an 11th-hour call-up for the game against Herefordshire at Eastnor Castle last weekend when Somerset pulled out ex-Blundell’s captain Dom Bess to play in a second eleven game against Kent.

Drew didn’t have a great first innings – none for 43 from six overs – but second time round it was a different story.

Herefordshire collapsed to 105 all out with Drew taking a record-busting seven wickets for just 15 runs.

They were the best figures ever by a Devon player in his debut game, breaking a record set in 1906 by George Hawksworth against Cornwall at Tavistock.

Herefordshire were 16 for six in the tenth over and Drew had taken all the wickets to fall for just three runs conceded,

Keith Donohue, Devon’s director of cricket, said Drew turned what looked like a lost cause into a meaningful contest again.

“Jamie found a length early on, got the ball swinging and a rhythm going and was on a sticky track that suited him,” said Donohue.Returning - Liam Lewis

“Not only did Jamie bowl well, but we backed him up in the field by taking our catches, some of them pretty good ones.

“Hereford started to panic a bit, they played some injudicious shots and we were able to capitalise.”

The game at Eastnor ended in a tie after Devon were set 208 to win.

Although Drew stays in Devon’s 13 for the game against Wiltshire, there is no place for clubmate and opener Dylan Penberthy.

Penberthy was given a chance in the absence of Blundell’s schoolmaster Liam Lewis, but in four trips to the middle he made 0,1, 5 and 10.

Lewis is back for this game, as is former Shobrooke batsman Dan Pyle, who has been finishing his A-levels at Blundell’s and missed the game against Herefordshire.

Play starts daily at 11am and continues until 7pm.

Devon’s new programme will be on sale for the first time at the game, priced at £2 each.

The 32-page programme contains information about the county club, the players and some career statistics.

A thousand copies have been printed and will be on sale at the three Minor Counties Championship home games this season.

Volunteers will be selling scorecards and programmes around the ground during all three-days of the game.
