CONRAD SUTCLIFFE REPORTING
TEDDY Haffenden will lead Plymouth in the Tolchards DCL Premier Division next season after taking over the tiller from Sam Stein.
After three years in his second stint as captain, and a promotion-winning stint to boot, Stein is reverting to his seam-bowling role in 2026.
“I am hoping I have laid a base for Ted to work from and propel us higher up the table this coming season,” said Stein.
“We have gathered a side that could compete on all fronts – especially in the top half of the table – and consolidated back in the Premier Division."
Batter Haffenden, who has worked his way through the Mount Wise youth system, takes over a competent side that finished sixth out of ten in its first season back in Devon’s top flight.
Across the board it was a successful season for Plymouth, who won three league promotions in men’s and women’s cricket.
Haffenden, who topped Plymouth’s batting aggregates (490) and averages (32.67) in 2025, is keen to build on Stein’s legacy.
“I am buzzing to be taking on the role of 1st XI skipper,” said Haffenden.
“The club is in a really good place from Sam’s time in charge, and there’s a real positive feel around.
"Last season was a great year with a double promotion in the men’s (2nd and 3rd XIs), our women winning their league and huge amounts of junior success. The aim is to kick on from there."
“There’s some seriously talented cricketers coming up through the club, so looking to develop them, play some exciting cricket and get good results on the field. Should be a good season ahead.”
It’s been fairly quiet on the close-sesaon transfer front so far, although Haffenden is on the lookout for players.
“No new signings to report as of yet,” said Haffenden. “And still weighing-up a few options in terms of an overseas player.”
South African all-rounder Mekyle Pillay (34 wickets, 400-plus runs) was the overseas talent at Mount Wise last summer. It looks like he won’t be back as his CV is currently being circulated by a recruitment agency.
