DEVON have made three changes to the side thrashed by Berkshire first time out for the three-day game against Cornwall at Truro, which starts on Sunday.

Early order batter Sam Elstone comes into the top for in place of Elliot Hamilton, who is unavailable for the remainder of the season.First game: Harry Southgate

Runs in the league for Sidmouth, and for the Devon Lions Development XI, have earned Elstone his place.

"Sam has scored a huge volume of runs and deserves a shot in the three-day side,” said Devon captain James Horler.

“He always looks to bat positively and looked in no trouble against Somerset at Exmouth on Tuesday.

“Sam is a great player of spin, which could come in handy on day three at Truro.”

Harry Southgate, another Lions graduate, gets the nod after a successful collection of scores in the development squad. He replaces Ben Beaumont, whose form has dipped.

Matt Skeemer, a regular in last season’s Western Division One title-winning side comes in as an additional bowler. He was work-tied for the game against Berkshire. Charlie Sharland makes way.

Left-armer Max Shepherd, 12th man against Berkshire, remains in the travelling party and is likely to play on a surface that favours spinners.

Devon were 10-wickets losers against Berkshire in a rain-affected game at Instow in their Western Division opener.

If Devon lose to Cornwall the pressure will be on in the last two games against Cheshire then Oxfordshire to pick-up the points to steer clear of relegation danger.

Devon were comprehensively out-batted by Berkshire, especially in their first innings when they crept to a modest 222 all out before the end of their 90 overs.

“I thought Berkshire bowled well against us, but the key is getting to 90 overs,” said Horler. What we didn't do well last time was get there with wickets in hand, so we could accelerate. “The first innings at Truro will be hugely important….”
