Foreword by the President Devon County Cricket Club
I am delighted to introduce this third editi on of our home match brochure, the
brainchild of our Committ ee member, David Thorneley. Now distributed widely
at home fi xtures and elsewhere, it serves, as intended, to raise the profi le of
the County Cricket Club and Minor Counti es cricket in general, and refl ects the
important part cricket plays in the wider Devon community. We are grateful once
again for the generous contributi on from a growing number of adverti sers who make
it all possible. I suspect David is upset at being put in the limelight like this, but the
President insisted!
Over the close season, ECB carried out a nati onal survey amongst those playing
Minor Counti es cricket which showed categorically that players rated the 3-day
championship as the most popular and valuable form of the game. It is, aft er all, the only opportunity for non
professional players to play other than the more restricted limited overs form of cricket, and as such is an
important part of the player pathway to greater things. The survey also showed that young players also wanted
to embrace both the 50-over and T20 forms, and to echo the professional game in terms of coloured clothing,
white-ball format. Hence the changes being introduced to fi xtures this summer with the 3-day games being
grouped towards the end of season to improve availability once exams, etc, are over.
As always, we are very grateful to local clubs who host our home fi xtures, and in parti cular this year we are
delighted to be playing a 3-day fi xture at Plymouth Cricket Club’s Mount Wise ground; a most welcome return
of county cricket to West Devon and its major city.
