Q&A - Hugo Whitlock
1. What have you made of Minor Counti es
cricket so far and have you enjoyed it?
It’s great! It’s a big step up and i’m a fan of
longer format cricket. The 3 day trips away are
always good fun.
2. Can you remember who your debut was
against and how it went?
My fi rst ever game was for Harberton U13s
when I was 9. I got 3 wickets and a run out so
I probably peaked
a bit early. My fi rst
competi ti ve Devon
CCC game was against
Dorset at Instow. I
didn’t bowl great
running into a gale
but it was fun having a
litt le hit at the end of
our innings. .
What is the best
moment you have
experienced when representi ng Devon?
Bowling against Oxford in the 3 day game when
the ball was reversing was prett y enjoyable.
But my fi rst Devon wicket which came against
Berkshire is a happy memory.
Describe yourself in one word? Easygoing.
Who is the worst player to share a room with
on away trips?
I’ve only roomed with a few of the guys so far,
but a couple of them made me watch Love
Island which I can confi rm is awful!
You took on a role of responsibility early in
your career opening the bowling, how did you
fi nd it?
I’ve never had ‘express pace’, so being able to
get the ball to move and be quite consistent
with my areas was always a strength. Because of
that opening the bowling has always suited me
and it’s a role I enjoy.
Did you set yourself any goals or makers to
help ?
When the job is to ti e up an end I aim to
go at 2s and 3s. More recently, in the 50
over games, I’ve had more of a focus on
taking wickets so I really just aim to make
something happen!
Could you expand upon your diet as it
seems to amuse the Devon boys?
I just don’t like most foods! I never have
and I can’t really explain it. My diet basically
consists of fruit, veg, chicken and loads and
loads of chips...
Describe your batti ng in one word?
I don’t know about one word, but I’d say it’s ‘See
ball, hit ball’.... Unless I miss it.
Who is the worst player to be next to in the
changing rooms?
I’ve not had any problems yet, although Golds
does seem to spread his kit over about 3 seats.
Any nutriti onal ambiti ons ?
There’s a few chippies I haven’t been to yet. And
every now and again I discover something new I
like so all hope is not yet lost!
List three things on your bucket list?
1: Watch basketball and baseball in the USA.
2: Explore the ‘Lord of the Rings’ landscapes in
New Zealand. 3: Own a Tesla.
Sporti ng hero?
Peter Crouch! Tall, lanky, funny and played for
Spurs. What’s not to like?
What is your favourite other sport?
Has to be basketball. I don’t understand why it’s
not bigger in this country.
Any supersti ti ons?
Touch wood!
TV or music?
Defi nitely TV. Unless it’s Love Island.
Yorker or Bouncer?
For me, a yorker is more eff ecti ve, but it’s much
more fun to dig it in.
If you were stranded on an island and could
have one team mate with you who would it
be?
I’d have to ask around and see who could make
a solar powered chip fryer.
Did Warren Gatland give you a call to fi ll in for
second row in the Briti sh and Irish Lions aft er
Devon’s rugby video went viral?
Strangely not! He must not have heard that I
was Kingsbridge U8s ‘Most Improved Player’.
What’s the strangest talent you have?
I can juggle whilst riding a unicycle..
