Veteran umpire Phil Wright dies aged 93 + numbers will be limited to 25 at funeral due to corona virus fears

DEVON'S umpiring community has lost one of its oldest members with the death of Phil Wright.

Phil, who was 93, died recently in a South Devon nursing home. He was a member of the South Devon branch of DACO and umpired extensively on the midweek touring circuit at Paignton and Torquay.

Paignton captain George Benton, one of Phil’s grandchildren, said: “He was a lovely man and will be missed.”

During his working life Wright was a civil servant based in London. He is survived by his wife Vera.

Phil Wright’s funeral will take place at St Luke’s Church, Torquay on March 23 at 1.30pm. Non-family mourners are asked not to attend due to the current health crisis. A memorial service will be held in due course.
