The Devon Cricket Foundation has partnered with Devon & Cornwall Police to promote an initiative aimed at deterring criminal activity affecting cricket clubs in the county.

Under the initiative Deter Rats, Devon & Cornwall Police (D&C Police) are providing guidance to cricket clubs to protect their assets and provide a heavily subsidised property marking pack, which will ensure all clubs' assets are identifiable and traceable should anything be stolen.

The initiative follows on from a recent increase in criminal activity affecting sports clubs across the region, which has sadly included Devon-based cricket clubs.

D&C Police have partnered with a company called DeterTech to offer a SmartWater property marking and signage package at an extremely affordable rate (approx. 80% discount), courtesy of a large subsidy. "We would strongly advise clubs to sign up for this scheme and make the most of this very attractive offer," says DCF Funding & Facilities Manager, Nick Goodliffe.

Clubs interested in the "SmartWater" Business Pack should fill in the below Expression of Interest Form.

Speaking on the initiative, D&C Police's Business Crime Prevention Officer said:

"My department are really keen support the local sports clubs where we can after identifying the trend in these types of crimes across our force area."

Deter Rats is a useful mnemonic D&C Police have created to help clubs protect their assets:

  • D - Delay lights with timers.
  • E - Evaluate current security provision.
  • T - Target items out of view.
  • E - Ensure property and area are tidy.
  • R - Remove ladders and tools.
  • R - Reduce risk by property marking.
  • A - Ask questions if unsure.
  • T - Talk to a professional about improvements.
  • S - Surveillance (CCTV/Security Lights).
