Newton St Cyres carry of Mid-Devon T20 cup after nail-biting win over Yeoford

WOODBURY & Newton St Cyres were the winners of a nail-biting final against Yeoford in the Mid-Devon League of Friends tournament at Cheriton Fitzpaine.

Yeoford made 125 in the final with Shaun Hawkins making 30 before retiring. Youngster Jack Garner (1-14) was St Cyres leading bowler.

St Cyres kept supporters on the edge of their seats before clinching a nine-wicket victory with three balls to go.

Shenan Grousburg and the Collier brothers, Chris and Alistair, all retired on 30. Eight to win from the final over of the day was not a problem for St Cyres’ 14-year-old batsman Harvey Shipton, who hit the winning runs.

Woodbury & Newton St Cyres reached the final by defeating league champions Exeter Erratics with an over and a half to go Grousburg made 31 which contributed to him being named player of the day.

Yeoford defeated the host club in their semi-final in a last-over finish with Hawkins and Dan Uren their outstanding players.

Cheriton made nearly £500 during the day, which will be invested in ground improvements.

Exeter Erratics, who won the qualifying league, were presented with thieir champions' shield during the day.
